Be prepared for 10 different answers from 10 people....

I use Mobil 1 in all my SHOs, and have for years. 0W30 in most, 0W40 in the ones that I know have larger bearing clearances.

The most important thing is to pick one brand of oil and be consistent - the greatest risk is when changing from one brand to another, since some additives of one brand don't play well with some additives of some other brand. Just pick one that you like and stick with it.

I run amsoil synthetic 5-40 diesel oil. The diesel oil's have all the zink and friction modifiers our engines need that a lot of new age oils don't have. If you don't use the oils with enough friction modifiers in it, you'll wear away your cam lobes. Stay away from energy conserving SM rated oils.

EDIT: Don't be as worried with what type of oil to run (don't get me wrong there are oils that are better then others) but change interval's are the key. every 3k miles or less depending on how bad you beat on the car has always been a good rule of thumb.

SM oils are fine.

use the proper viscosity as recommended by ford/yamaha and change it every 3k and you will be fine.

you can use any brand of your choosing.

IIRC the SM rated oil's are the energy conserving oils which all tend to be low in zink and phosphorous (some of the main friction modifiers) because that stuff burns up the cats faster. They don't want the cats crumbling and falling out the exhaust pipe and into the environment which is why they now make these oils. However new vehicles are meant to be run with these oils, where as old style flat tappet type vehicles need more lubrication. Maybe the sho is not AS effected as old old vehicles, but run an SM oil (like mobile one) in a 60's muscle car with a flat tappet cam, and you wont have a camshaft very long, ask me how I know.

I use Amsoil's 10W-40. I have over 180K and a couple of Porsche Club Airport DE's and the car still runs great.
