I had recently purchased my SHO at 156,000 miles about 2 weeks ago. I relize that the car is going to have its fair share of problems but this is one of the major concerns recently. Some times i would have a hard time starting the car, and once it was started, my tach would not always come on right away. Every now and then i would be driving along and the engine would start to get real jumpy, jumping from 800 to 1300 rpm in idal. 3 days ago i went to start my car and it would'nt turn over. I beileve the problem lies in the CPS and maybe the DIS. Does any one have any pointers. I picked up a new CPS and i am hoping this will solve my starting problems so i can give my car a run at the track this weekend.

That actually sounds more like a CID problem to me. Hard starting is congruent with the failure of the cam sensor. Also, if i am correct, the cam sensor helps the computor control the tach.

Cylinder indentification (CID) sensor. Textbook symptoms. Much easier installation than the CPS and a cheaper part.

Hmmm...

Is can the no-start/hard to start problem be intermittant with this sensor? Occasionally my '95 is somewhat difficult to start, and a few months back the tach decided to have fits under hard acceleration where I would take off fast and it would "jump" the needle up to where it was supposed to be (sometimes like 1k higher than where it was before the jump).

I'm wondering if replacing the CID sensor would improve my overall SHO experience!

Thanks :)

Intermittant? Yes. By hard starts we mean that the engine may backfire or even stop rotating from a mistimed spark event. The CID failing can also cause stumbles while driving and the loss of the tachmometer.

The CID (cylinder identification) sensor identifies when the number one cylinder is at TDC during cranking to synchronize the spark and fuel flow to the correct cylinders. Without its input, the EEC just guesses. Sometimes the results are ugly. There is only one correct answer.

My '90 had the same symptoms that you are describing, I replaced the CID and everything was back to normal.

Well, maybe I'll have to give it a try. Every now and then the car starts perfectly right as I turn the key. Other times it sits there and chokes. Usually it starts the first try (95%+). Will these symptoms throw a code of any kind though?

Also, does anyone happen to know the AutoZone name for the temperature gauge sensor? (The one right next to the thermostat.) The only thing I can find is $16 and I know the dealer part for that is cheaper...

Thanks
