I have searched the archives and cannot seem to find the answer so here goes. I have a 91 SHO with broken EATC buttons. I got a hard button EATC on Ebay but the unit is about 1/4" too short all around. I think I can make it work by removing the locator pins but is that always required for a 91 or is there a unit with hard buttons that fits w/o any mods?

There is currently one on Ebay that measures the same as my old one and he says it has hard buttons with green lighting.

I am concerned that the unit will be too small for the dash opening and may not line up properly if I cut off the pins. I don't want to modify if I don't have to. Any advice?

Thanks
Don

Don, which new hard button eatc did you get ? did you get the one out of 95 SHO or is it out of a different model.

Does it say 1995 on it and is it blue lighting ?

I am not dure what car it came from. The seller said it came from a 93 Lincoln. The unit no. is F5PF-18C612-CBSR. Looking closer at it, it says made in Canada 071996. I guess it came from a 96 vehicle, not a 93 Lincoln?

It appears to have green lighting like I need. I just don't want to cut if I don't have to. Then the unit may not work well in another car.

Sorry for the long post

Don,
What you have is an upgraded EATC for the 93 Lincoln. Ford must have seen the need to build some replacement units for the older vehicles after they started using the solid buttons.
I don't know for sure whether the unit you purchased will even function properly in your Taurus. Your best bet would be to test it out in your car before removing the alignment pins so it will not be rendered undesireable by potontial future owners.
If the unit doesn't work for you I may have enough parts laying around to put together a face plate for you.

Yep, what you have is a unit out of a Lincoln. I pulled one from a 1995 Continental a couple of months ago. There was two problems:
1)It didn't fit right. I had to cut off the two pins and even trim a little around them to get it to look right when bolted up. Just take your time with that.
2)It didn't work right, the fan was stuck on in the OFF position. In my experience with hard-button units from Lincolns, none of them will work unless mated with a body from a Taurus/SHO. So after reading a post on here by DrDave, I took my Lincoln unit and old SHO stock EATC to a shop that done soldering. He soldered the new Lincoln faceplate to the SHO EATC body and it worked.

Thanks for the help guys. I can make the unit work. I dabble with acrylic in my aquarium hobby. I have some 1/8" black I can glue around the edge to take up some of the gap, no problem. My only problem now is getting my AC clutch to come on. I must have screwed something up when I took the EATC out to put the new one in.

I found an awesome post in the Utah Ford Club that details the AC check. I will check out my AC now.

Thanks again!!

I have a 97 Lincoln EATC unit (curved button model). I tried it in my 93 and had similar problems. Fan came on when the unit was off, didn't function properly, etc. I would like to find the schematics for both units if possible. I'm curious how someone changed the faces. I took both units apart and there is a slight difference. Both units have 2, 8 conductor ribbon cables, but the 93 has a seperate light plate powered by a 2 conductor ribbon that is not present in the 97. In the 97 it must be integrated in the other cables as the lights are on the same board as the rest of the circuitry. Maybe it's a 1:1 solder job and you just ignore the extra cable as there might be a supply voltage there as well. I'll give it a try and play around a bit. Spending any time outside trying to fool with it in the car right now is **** with the obsurd amout of mesquitos.

I soldered the new face onto the old control board and put everything in the new housing. Works great. Guess I answered my own question. :)

When I was done my ingition broke and I had to tear the column apart at 1:00 AM. It never ends.
