driver side axle installation

What was I thinking?

I installed my new axles today, filled my tranny with Royal Purple, and the driver's side axle seal is leaking a drop a second.

Should have changed out my axle seal. Even though I installed it new about a year ago when I did my tranny.

New axle, new seal.

Now I got to pull that axle again.

I remember tapping the old sela out from inside the case.

I guess that now I will have to pry it out.

Any tips?

Dont scratch the mating surface on the tranny case

To remove mine, I think I remeber just grabbing the inside edge of the metal portion of the seal with fine needle-nise pliers. Then PULL.

To reinstall, I used an ABS pipe "cap" and a rubber mallot.

is there any way to tell if the seals are still good?
i just picked up my trans, with 60k on it.... ran with red line tranny fluid....
i wanted to know if there was any way to tell if they were still good?

If you have the axles out, replace the seals.

Simple as that.

That's for the passenger side, the driver's side will be the same, just easier to access.

Dam!!! i wish i had knew about that earlier.... thats the reason im in this position... pass. side axle leak.... had about half a quart in the trans.... then it went shoboom..... well the spider gear did....

Anytime axles or the tranny is replace new seals should be put in.

My axle seals are fairly new and still leak a bit.

I only change 'em when they leak, but they shouldn't leak at all when they're working right.

They can be pried out, and there are raised tabs on the tranny case to help do this.

Scratching the tranny mating surface is that big of a deal compared to gouging the rubber seal. The mating surface can be sealed up from leaking as you install. Once the rubber seal is gouged, it is done.

Any brand axle seal is good, or should I get it from a Ford dealer?

Autozone claims to have them in stock.

I do not want to this this again.

When I installed the Quaife, I changed the seals, and they never leaked.

I have had three different sets of seals on my SC car trannies. Two sets have leaked.

I guessing with the amount of torque plus all the banging that happens sometime during with wheel hop/accleration that may cause the seal to become somewhat pressed or damaged.

I'm getting a solid tranny mount from HyperMike. I'm hoping that will solve alot of issues.

It apparently helps quite a bit to put some anaerobic sealant on the ****** when replacing these. I'd never seen instructions anywhere (including the Helm) to do this, but I've had them leak when this isn't done. If folks are having trouble with the seals leaking they may try using some good anaerobic sealant (NOT RTV) when replacing the output shaft seals.

Yep, Josh @ SHOnut does this in his Quaife video. It won't stop leaks between the axle and the seal, but it'll seal up any imperfections between the ****** and tranny case.

This is what happend to me. Did the clutch and replaced the seals. They leaked around the ******. Had to replace them again with tranny installed. Much more of a PITA that time I used the anaerobic sealant and they haven't leaked a bit.
