Well me and my friend just wrapped it up for the night, car is running and nothing blew up!!

While everything was apart I hot tanked all the runners, surge tank and valve covers.

Here is a close up of the front two camshafts, I have some better pictures but I have to unload them from my blackberry using the computer.

Cam repair

Hello Im new to the Forum but not SHO,s
Right now I have a '96 with a stripped? gear on the cam (Bank 2, Intake...the one that turns the water pump pully).

I see that you welded one of your pullys, maybe the same one I have a problem with?
Did you do this because the pully stripped off inside also, like mine?

If so how did you figure out where to set the cam itself, so that It would be in time before welding?
I see the timing marks for the pullys but a what location should the cam be at TDC?

Thanks Mark Hatheway

ummm, he welded the cam BEFORE it broke. thats why you weld them. Its already in time. If it breaks, then it would be out of time, and it would also bend valves.

Do a search on cam welding ... you'll find some great info. If the car is not being run and the cam has not slipped to much, it is POSSIBLE to reposition and fix it. Depends on extent of damage so far

Ummmm ... Many spun cams can be repaired. All depends on extent of damage.

I welded the cams as a PM step. I am sure if the damage was not too extensive you could weld the sprocket back on if it had spun (sheared) from the actual shaft. My concerns would be at that point keeping the face of the sprocket perpendicular to the shaft and also keeping the total run out of the two pieces within a reasonable tolerance.

Also I don't know what steps you would need to take to "time" the lobe orientation to peaks and valleys of the cam sprocket. I am also sure the cam sprockets have holes in them for temporary alignment while installing a timing chain.

Personally, I would look for a used cam in good shape.

this is true my rear exhaust cam crapped out and i re timed the cam and had it welded there is marks on the cam to line the gear up.. tho a lot of members on here don't believe in welding failed cams tho i have a good 30k miles on mine

tho when i had it welded the welder welded all the way around the cam that failed and not just 3 spots
