Anyone know where I can get an adapter to fit a single DIN (Blaupunkt) into the dash on my 89, in place of the standard head unit?

Thanks

You don't need to purchase ANY type of DIN adapter for your 89. This is what I did to make it look like this:

Here is a list of parts you will need:
1. 1/4" trip piece (available at any Best Buy installation bay or Circuit City)
2. appropriate harness (avaialable at same place make sure you tell them you want to bypass the stock amp if you want your Blaupunkt to power your speakers instead of the Ford amp)

What you do is first remove the ********* piece that goes around your whole radio. This is the same big piece that houses your antenna up/down switch. There is one bolt underneath the setup you have to remove before pulling the whole piece out. After you remove that bolt, there are a few clips that is still holding it in place. Just pulll it and it will come off.

Next you remove your stock radio and put nothing in its place. Now what you do is front load your aftermarket radio onto that removed place piece. You basically attach it with the metal cage to that black piece with the trim piece sitting after the black piece and before the radio.

It will go in this order:
::DASH::BLACK PIECE::BLACK 1/4" TRIM PIECE::METAL CAGE THAT HOLDS RADIO::RADIO::

When you are done re-attach the black piece (that has your cd player attached to it) back into the dash and you now have a front loaded cd player that fits as flush as possible with your dash.

If you have any questions just PM me.

Brett,

LL has the right idea... and it looks pretty good as long as you get the ABS ring. The other "correct" way FWIW, is to buy a mounting kit for this application. My shop uses Bestkits and the Bestkit part number is BKFJ1550B which just screws into the holes where the factory deck screwed in. The deck is resessed behind the trim panel, so it looks nicely. Either way the deck WILL work nicely, just depends on how ambitious you are. Typically the kit will run you about 15 bucks.

Just my .02 worth

If he installs the head unit using your method, will he still be able to fit the aftermarket radio's trim panel around the radio or will the aftermarket head unit just sit nicely behind the dash opening?

I remember getting some other tauraii in the install bay and our problem using a kit was the aftermarket head unit was crooked when installed behind the dash. shrug

Alex,

With this kit, the deck sits behind the panel but it does allow for the radios trim panel as well. Obviously you don't have to put it on, but I'd paint the radios cage black if u choose this route. There are a few radios out there, mainly the higher end radios with tilt faces, etc. that do have a problem being in the dash that far. They catch on the factory trim plate.

I recall the crooked radio days too. I only had that problem with Metra kits though. The Best Kits we use now line up straight every time. Of course, the Best Kits suck for other cars... like the 96-99 taurus for example.

Also, depending on how truely ambitious you are, u can make a custom kit. In my '89 LX, I took a piece of Black plexi and fabricated a kit flushmounting the deck in it. It looked REALLY nice in the dash. I may still have a pic around somewhere, I'll post it if I can find it. After I ripped my stereo out of the LX and installed my next deck, I just used the ABS trim and did it like yours. Much faster!! :)
