Crank Pully?

What kind of puller should i use to remove the crank pully? Do i need a harmonic dampener pully removal tool or will a 4 in. or 6 in. universal pully removal tool work? Thanks.

You need to use a damper puller that can take two M8 bolts to screw into the the threaded holes in the damper. Do not use a pulley puller that grips the rim since it can pull the outer ring off the hub. There is a rubber material between the two parts of the damper that will not tolerate the pulley puller if it is a tough pull. Most auto Parts stores have an appropriate damper/steering wheel puller set.

Checker has the kit for $15. I bought the correct bolts (or at least ones that worked) at Lowes for $0.67. They come two to a package. Look for M8-1.25x60 hex cap screws. The brand is Hillman H#880684. You can also "rent" a kit for free if you return it within two days. I purchased mine because this my first major car project and I didn't want to feel rushed.

Thanks for the info. i'm glad i didn't go ahead and use the pully puller. I thought that it might seperate the rubber.

Is the crank pully bolt left handded or right handed threads. Any good tricks to breaking it free. Whats the best place to lock the crank to prvent it from turning while breaking the bolt loose. I can't use the starter bump mehod cause the motor is not in the vehical.

It's a lefty loosy, righty tighty type of bolt. If the motor is out of the car, you'd better get out the impact gun. Yeah, the big one.

I took mine out with a ratchet-pipe combination. And it was an engine stand!

I put two flywheel bolts in the rear of the crank (duh), and placed a long prybar between the bolts. I turned the crank til the prybar handle was pressing against the bottom of the stand, and WHA-LA! Loose bolt.

My small impact gun didn't do squat on that, though.

I got it by a similar method. Then spent 30 min sweetin my A$$ off to get the pully off. That has to be the hardest pully I've ever removed. The one on my 94 SHO came right off within just a couple of turns on the pully puller. I nearly ruined my puller on this one. I had to turn it a liitle and than tap it with a hammer over and over.
