I had to re-read the thread but it looks like the ECU got bricked somehow at the very beginning. It was not firing the injectors. Is that your take?

That would be my assessment of the situation. The mechanic shop that figured it out for sure said that for some reason, the PCM was shorting out on the connection to the injectors on one side of the engine, causing all of the injectors to stop spraying fuel, and that it would run on the other three cylinders if that bank of injectors was unplugged.
