I am in the middle of replacing the front main seal and I am having a **** of a time trying to get the crank bolt off. Ive had it off a few times before but this time it wont budge. Everytime other time my impact gun took it off with no problem except for one instance where I had to use the starter to break it loose. This time that doesnt even work.

With a breaker bar against the subframe I could literally try and turn it over for 20 seconds and it wont budge. As soon as the breaker bar hits the subframe, it stops it dead. You can feel the torqe of the engine build as it tries to turn but she doesnt budge.

Any suggestions?

Thanks..

Well, first to do this make sure that you are using a 6-point socket not a 12. Position the breaker bar on the crank bolt and give it about 6in-1ft from the breaker bar to the subframe. So, when you crank the engine the starter can build up a little bit of speed in cranking the engine before the stress of the bolt is put into play. Maybe, the sudden pulse of "umph" on the bolt from the breaker bar striking the subframe might be enough to break it loose. I have not tried this just a thought that went through my head. Good luck to you.

If all else fails, I have a way to get it off. It requires some extra stuff, but it should work.
Mine was stuck, pretty badly, and nothing else (starter, impact wrenches, breaker bars, fire) would get it off. If you are still having trouble in a day or two, let me know, and I'll send you pictures and everything. I would send it now, but I am headed for bed, and I'm under the influence of various medications.
Just in case I forget to check back here, send an e-mail to [email protected]
Later,
Tony

Holding the starter does nothing but burn out the starter. It's the "WHAP" of the sudden impact between the bar & the subframe that will jar it loose.

Since it's not the threads that are locking the bolt down, but rather the interface between the ****** on the bolt & the crank dampener, I have done 2 things recently that have worked on engines out of the car, where I couldn't use the starter bump method:

1) cutoff wheel, & carefully cut off 2 halves of the ****** of the crank bolt. I didn't have to go all the way through, just enough to "fold" the bolt ****** up a bit off the dampener. Results: came off, you need to buy a new bolt.

2) Drill holes through the crank bolt ******. Results: came off, need a new dampener & bolt.

I needed to get my crank bolt off, but had a **** of a time because the engine was already out. I ended up using one of the belts wrapped areound the A/C compressor, with a breaker bar. Worked like a charm.
P.S. DO NOT USE THE WATER PUMP!!! It will snap off like candy!!! eek!

If you have a more powerful battery available to you I would try that. I have always got them off with a few good wacks with the starter. Don't hold it, just give it a whack a few times. :D

I understand that once the bar hits the sub frame it is useless to keep the ignition key turned on unless you want to replace the starter as well. I was just using it as an example. I have a 6 point Craftsman socket and breaker bar that I am using and have tried giving the bar some space between the sub frame hoping the snap would break it loose but was unsuccessful.

I've got a couple things to try yet once I get someone to give me a hand. If I get someone to help me prevent the crank from turning, I will be able to break it loose. All it takes is some patience, beer, and a few cuss words. I've got plenty of beer and I am very loquacious with cuss words.

Thanks for your help & I'll let ya know who wins.

Heat the bolt. Put some heat on the center of the bolt and heat it up. Not too hot, just enough to expand and contract the bolt.

It's worked for me in the past.
