I want to remove the intake and clean it and the engine soon since im getting outta college in a few days. I wondered if there was anything difficult or any serious risk in doing so, as I am worried about something messing up. I know it seems pretty straight foward, but I wanted to get some opinions. Im not clueless about how things go together etc, but if anyone could give me some tips that would be great. Ive read the docs on shotimes.com and some here so I have a descent idea of what to do. Also, it seems that whenever I turn on certain accessories, such as the defroster or a/c, the engine struggles to keep alive. The tach will dip, and if Im driving and disengage the clutch, the rpm's will plummit and freeze the engine (not good eek! ) Any ideas? 60k was done awhilewhile ago minus the valve adjustment. Thanks again :)

Sounds like the IAB/IAC isn't doing its job. There is a cleaning procedure on the shotimes faq. Some have a design that make them uncleanable but I forget what year that was. As for taking the intake off it's pretty straight foreward. I would suggest using things like baggies and masking tape to label stuff as you take it off to make reassembly easier. Keep your eye on the vacuum lines on the rear of the intake so you don't accidently pinch them when you put it back together.

How many miles do you have? If you have above 60k, and have never taken teh intake off. I would reccomend having an intake manifold gasket set ready, just in case they are not reusable or get damaged. Felpro # MS 94831? I'm pretty sure thats the number. Ask SDPatt, he is the local SHO guru/god. He knows all! Later and good luck.

ok, everything seems to be intact, but I will check before I start to do anything. On the outside, its very dirty, hence me wanting to clean it. It has about 95k on it, plus or minus a few, and runs super strong in my opinion. is the gasket the seal part?

The gasket is not part of the seal set. It is a coated metal gasket. There is one at the iab and throttle body also. They are reusable if the black coating doesn't flake/peel too much.

Before removing and cleaning things, make sure your idle is set properly. You have to reset the computer and let it relearn it's idle with a lot of load, or else later, when you apply that load, it won't idle properly.

Scott's posted some good instructions on how to do this. Do a search on past threads.

Okay, I'll save you some trouble. Just found the idle reset procedure all typed out.

1) Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2) Turn on the headlight switch.
3) Wait at least 10 minutes.
4) Turn off headlight switch.
5) Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
6) Start engine normally (never press on the gas pedal).
7) Allow idle speed to settle for at least 15 seconds.
8) Within 70 seconds of starting the engine, apply all accessory loads the engine will see at idle. Do these concurrently.
8a) Climate control to MAX A/C.
8b) Headlight switch ON.
8c) Turn steering wheel 1/2 turn side to side.
8d) Press brake pedal.
8e) ATX SHOs only: shifter to DRIVE.
9) Do not turn off engine for at least 5 minutes.
10) It is preferable that the car be driven immediately after setting the idle programming.
11) While driving, allow the coolant temperature to rise to the normal range.
12) Run the car through its entire performance range.

Do this right now. Seriously...now. I'm not kidding. Immediately.

I had the same RPM dip and it was because of a dirty IAB valve. I cleaned it via SHOtimes.com instructions and it's fixed.
