I have to replace the impeller part of my waterpump soon, and got the A1-Cardone unit from rockauto.com (37.39+10 core...not bad at all IMO). Do I have to remove the crankshaft pulley to just replace this piece? I am quite dexterous, so thats not a problem...I just REALLY dont want to have to remove that pulley in my driveway as I dont know how to put it back on. At the BARE MINIMUM...what must be removed in order to just replace the impeller part of the waterpump?

When you pop the water pump loose, coolant wil go everywhere, timing belt, CPS, etc. Coolant is not good for the belt....

Removing the dampener isn't that big of a deal as long as you can get the tool from AutoZone and it has the correct metric sized bolts.

The water pump is one of those jobs that include "might as well since I'm in there" tasks. Timing belt, front main seal, CPS, etc. Very little extra work once you are at the water pump.

i should clarify...my car has had a full 120k service...the waterpump bearings are shot. I know i have to take off the timing belt, but do i HAVE TO take off the crankshaft pulley itself?

If our cars are set up the same, which I would imagine they are, you will probably have to. I got the upper piece of the timing belt cover off, but in order to get the lower part off, I have to take the very bottom bolts off. (the ones directly fore and aft of the pulley) The front one comes off, but the back one backs out until it hits the crank pulley. Why is this important? From the looks of it, you will need to get the timing belt off to get to the hose leading to the W/P, or more specifically, the bolts holding the hose to the pump. Unless you can get to the vanes from the front. I don't know.
So to refresh. Remove the P/S belt, tensioner pulley, upper timing cover, crank pulley, lower timing cover bolts, lower timing cover, timing belt (MARK IT!!) hose, W/P. This may have you removing too much, but this is how I remember it. (see my thread about crank pulley bolt removal, on page 2)

beware of the rockauto.com, I found the 3.0 DOHC listings were actually the pushrod 3.0 parts in some cases. This can be hard to verify dealing with a phone peddler, this price sounds way too cheap. Rebuilt parts may have a very short life spinning 7000rpm.

the a1-cardone comes highly recommended. i bought an extra seal set and that fits up with the impeller no problem.

Yes, the crank pulley has to be removed in order to remove the timing belt.

This part has been verified and has been used by many forum members, myself included.

It is far cheaper than the pump from Ford for very simple reasons: 1) The Ford part includes the rear half of the pump housing which contains no wearable parts at all, and 2) the Cardone unit sold by RockAuto is remanufactured, which means it has new seals and bearings.

I have not yet found any listings on rockauto's site that misidentify parts for the SHO. If you want that, AutoZone and PartsAmerica each have invalid listings in their systems that I have run across.

There have been very few reports of premature failures with the Cardone reman pumps. FWIW, I have never has a Cardone remanufactured anything fail yet in any vehicle that I have used them in.

Besides, the pump doesn't spin at the crank speed. Compare the pulley diameters.
