The heating system should have nothing to do with coolant flow.

Coolant is supposed to ALWAYS flow through the core.

Did you perhaps install the thermostat backwards?

well the temp gauge goes all the way up to N and only goes down to the O when the fan kicks in. but when i turn on the heat it goes down to R and M. could my waterpump be going?

Probably just have some trapped air in the system. Was the new thermo a -B revised that has the little jiggle vavle to help remove trapped air. If so did you place the jiggle valve at the 12 O'clock position.

If your not getting heat from the heat inside the car then you have a blend air door actuator problem. This could be a bad actuator a disconnected actuator arm or a vacuum supply issue to the valve.

Ok I miss understood your first post about the heat. Yes a fluctuating temp gage is generally air in the system and will burp out over time. Also keep in mind that there is a seperate sending unit for the gage than the pcm and fans.

No you don't need to flush and fill. That will just get more air into the system. You just need to run the car under normal operating temps (may take several cycles). Be sure to keep the coolant recovery bottle properly serviced. Some have had luck by messaging the upper radiator hose to help burp the air out (at operating temp).
