Well, I bumped the crank bolt off. It didn't seem loose just using a ratchet on there but it only took just a tiny little bump to loosen it all the way. I imagine the worst case scenario is what we're looking at here. :frown: I'll be removing the dampener and gear tomorrow for the final verdict.

Beth, when you get the accessory belt off, before you try with a dampener remover, try to wiggle the harmonic dampener off by hand. If it comes off without the aid of a removal tool (like in my case :frown:), things are probably pretty far gone.

Also, and I just thought about this, in my case when I finally was pulling the front of my 3.0 apart, I noticed that my timing belt tensioner nut was finger tight, and not gorilla tight like it was when I did the front 60k. Luckily, nothing got damaged, but didn't you have an issue with the tensioner on this car, or was it another car?

I tried a few minutes ago to wiggle it off by hand. It was on tight so I broke out my steering wheel/damper puller tool and that thing is on there OMG TIGHT. The bolts that came with the kit are cheesy and actually started to pull into the puller so I've ceased efforts until I go and get new bolts from the hardware store here shortly.

Maybe things aren't too bad if the tightness of the pulley is any indication of how bad things could be. We'll see directly though, I'm not holding my breath.

Edit: Yes, it was on this car that we had the tensioner/tensioner pulley issue.

Beth, picture the back half of the woodruff key slot being worn into an almost funnel-shape. The Key is either bent toward the left, or may be broken at the gear / dampener interface.

A slide hammer will help.

Gently take a regular screwdriver in one of the gear teeth & back of a ratchet handle / similar, give the gear a light rap from left to right (clockwise) to see if that'll give it a little wiggle. If it loosens up, you have play in there, not good.

Edit:
FYI, the really long timing cover bolts work very well for the crank gear, with washers, against the puller.

Fred, I'm not quite that far yet as I'm still struggling with the dampener. We put a strap wrench on it to keep the motor from turning and got it most of the way off, 2 or 3 more turns and it would be off. However.........the strap wrench broke so John's off with his friend to go get another one. :)

A strap wrench? Damn, did someone loctite it on there?

That would totally not surprise me one little bit. All I know is it was a bi....err pain to get off. Now the crank gear on the other hand just slide right off. Of course, I was able to remove the key before the gear which might explain that. That's how popped up the key was. When the dampener finally came off we noticed that the key was popped up a bit but I don't know if I moved it by accident or it was already like that.

Here's the pics I took, let the verdict be handed down.

And yes, we know the front main needs to be replaced.

A sight all to familiar. :frown:

Although, your keyway doesn't look nearly as bad as mine did...

I am not experienced in this field at all, but I am curious. How can you tell by the picture above that it's crank cancer?

Hmmm... maybe I'm missing something here, but that crank doesn't look bad at all. The woodruff key is shot but that's easily replaceable. Is the crank timing sprocket's keyway all chewed up? How about the dampener's keyway? That crank does not look bad to me. Crank cancer is where the keyway slot in the crank is rounded off.

Measure the keyway width Beth, or drop in that new key I sent you & take a pic. It should be a press-fit. If it's not, you'll continue to have issues. Also, when the crank's gone, you'll find a corresponding oversize groove on only part-way forward, or tapered toward the front. Yours looks pretty straight on the crank.

You MIGHT get away with a new gear / key / dampener, but get some more info on the keyway width first. I'll box up those parts mentioned & have them ready for your say-so.

If the gear has been moving that much to ware the key you can guarantee that the crank will be worn from the movement. It may only be a few tho but the gear will no longer be a press fit.
