I did the timing on my '95 not 3-4 days ago. For the first day or 2 it was fine. Then out of nowhere I hear this chirp coming from the same side. It was exactly the way it sounded before I did the timing. Took the serpentine belt off, ran the car, same noise. Sound appears to be coming from the rear cam gear or in the general area. Not sure exactly what is going on here. Can a gear chirp? I will update when I find out exactly where its coming from. Figured Id ask in case anyone else had any ideas.

Is my SHO just laughing at me? Me= :shakehead SHO= :laugh_ti:

Perhaps another tensioner issue?

I can't say that I know the cam sprockets to chirp, unless they're really loose or something. I would check your timing belt tensioners for play and looseness all the same before anything else, if I were in your shoes.

I tore everything down again today at work. It appears that the bolt that holds the tensioner on, actually the washer behind it, is rubbing on the pulley on the tensioner. I noticed that one side is flat. Is it a possiblity that the washer around the nut holding on the pulley could be too big? Its about 3-5 cm around outside the nut. And the notch in the middle of the pulley, is that where the tensioner's "finger" (sorry didn't know the name) supposed to go? When we put it on the first time I dont think it was in the notched area. But it ran fine for 2 days or so. Im going to be working on it in about 45 min or so. Ill keep you guys posted, or Mom will.

Try getting another tensioner from a member. I bet they'll give one up for cheap.

We've got everything back together now but the question still remains, Is the tensioner supposed to go into the slot on the tensioner pulley? Im guessing yes. Stupid question? So far so good. Updates more later.

Tensioner and belt on and tight. But now Im getting a ticking. Appears might be coming from the crank. I hope not.

From what I remember taking off the accessories on my 3.2L before I put it in my 92, the tension piston does go in the notch, and the washer is way too big if it has a radius of 3-5cm.

Give me a few minutes while I go take a quick picture of the parts in question before I ship them off...

Here you can see where the piston fits into the notch in the tensioner pulley and arm, as well at the size of the washer.

In this one, you can see the bushing sleeve, the washer again, and the nut and stud.

As always, click for hi-res version. :)

That's how we have it. Thank you very much for posting the pictures :hail: , if nothing else it's just reassuring that we got it on right.

It's still chirping away, John thinks it's coming from the crank. I've never heard what a car with crank cancer sounds like before so I really don't know. All I know is we're tired and dirty and ready to call it a night.

I guess it should be noted that on at ATX at least that you don't have to remove the crank bolt, etc. in order to change the timing belt and thus we did not, so whether or not the woodruff key or the crank is in bad shape or not we don't know. His next couple of days off, whenever those are, will be spent actually pulling those off to check and see what lies beneath.

Thanks again for the pictures. :thumb:

And Michael, no, this is on his blue 95. The green machine is just fine and purring like a kitten. :thumb:

In my case, my crank cancer sounded like a "rapping" noise from the front of the engine. Though about 18 months ago, it did have a chirping stage that stopped on its own, so it's worth checking out.

And for God sakes, don't be a ******* like I was. Use a torque wrench to tighten that crank bolt!! The only thing worse than crank cancer is knowing that you caused it by trying to git 'er done.

I'm not understanding why using a torque wrench to tighten it is a bad thing? Is is because it never really tightens it adequately and therefore increases your risk? I've just used my impact wrench in the past due to the motor turning when using anything else.

No clue Michael. Wish I could answer that question myself.

I made a little audio/video for you guys to hear. Honestly it sounds like it's coming from the crank to me. I'm going to get the crank bolt out and remove the gear here in a few to see what I see. Hopefully nothing but I have my doubts. :frown:

The video/audo was made in Flash so it's pretty compact and shouldn't take most very long to load. Let me know your opinions if you would please. I really don't know what to think of it. Please excuse the impatience in my voice, Joshua who was helping me was also talking to his g/f on the phone. Nuff said there.

Click for audio/video

More updates as soon as I can get them. I've got a million and one things going on right now, 2 cars down (this one and the 96 (AGAIN)....boo hiss) so it may take me a little while to get things coordinated. I feel like a freakin' yo-yo.

There was some powder but not a whole lot IMO. Here's a pic of what we saw when we first got it opened up that far. The metal shavings were coming from the timing belt tensioner pulley, it was grinding on the bracket that holds it in place because the nut was "missing" from the back side of the bracket.

This whole car is totally jerry rigged, I've never seen anything like it in my life.

Forgot a comma.

Using a torque wrench is what you want to do to make sure you torque the crank bolt sufficiently.

I just played the video. :frown:

Don't bother pulling that pulley off. You have crank cancer.
