while fixing my ****** on my stock y pipe, i gave the cats a wrap or two with my fist and discovered that they are starting to come apart, which leads me to believe this is what is causing my loss of power. i know the best thing to do it buy a after market set-up, but im not opposed to breaking the rest of the material out of the cats and leaving it at that. i am also aware that it will most likely not pass emissions after doing so, but i have ways around that. i am wondering if anyone knows a better way to achieve this with out cutting the y pipe up and welding it back together, again not really a issue other than me not wanting to put that much effort into it. so if anyone has any ideas, please let me kno, thanks.

Plenty of SHOs have passed emissions without cats; the engine - if properly cared for - is pretty clean-burning.

some people have punched holes in the side of the cat with a screwdriver and broken up the guts that way. Patching the hole can be done via weld or via exhaust patch.

Put in straight pipes. There is no point in spending the time gutting the cats when it would be easier to weld in straight pipes. Most of the time the metal on the cat sections of the y-pipes is so rusted or thin that it is hard to weld it back because it burns right through.

i really like straight pipe idea, the exhaust is in verry good shape, i had no problems welding flowmaster 40s out back, and the y is in just as good if not better shape than the back of the car. thanks for the great idea!

you might want to research "the cat that killed a SHO"

it's a story about broken particles of a cat being sucked back into the cylinder and doing a real bad number on the rings and walls.
not sure if it was even posted in a forum, I read about in in the SHO Registry many years ago.
