I have not posted in the logest time since I bought my 99 about 3 months ago. Just recently however my car wont go over 105mph. I was on the highway going home about a week ago and needed to pass someone who was going rather slow, now i am not the type of person who does 100+ mph all the time but thats besides the point. When I reached that speed and put it to the floor it acted as though there was a govenor put on my car. When it reached that speed it kinda just learched forward wanting to go but couldn't. The cam welds on the car have been done for over a month just to add a side fact. I tried again about 2 more times and it still will not go over that speed. If nayone can advise me on what might be wrong I would really apreciate it thanks again

Well I have a somewhat similar problem, when my speedo reaches 105+ it drops to zero but I still accelerate (watch my tach). I do need to get a OBD scanner too bad I can't afford one yet :p

All 1998 SHO's for some reason the speedos drop to 0mph after 110mph. Do to some sort of interferance. The 96, 97, and 99's do not have this problem. The car will still accelerate as it only affects the readout of the speed. This also theoretically removes the speed limiter as the car doesnt know what speed its at. So far I dont know anyone with a good enough laywer to try for over 144mph in a 1998 SHO and see if the speed limiter still works.

As for your problem I would assume its computer related as its holding the car back at 105mph. If you like my dad hopefully you still have ESP warrenty left on it and you can just drop it off at your local ford dealer. If not there is a network of knowledgeable SHO owners here willing to help you out.

Actually its after 120 mph, the speedo goes nuts. I found that out one day...

That 105 problem is weird, I hit 105 not even trying on the way up to Michigan, but I let off at that speed, it still wanted to go with no problem though...

I have not checked with my lawyer, but I did check the speed limiter at that number and it does not work on my '98. Or so claimed my friend with the radar gun. wink

In the 98-99 SHO, the transmission does not have a V.S.S. ( Vehicle speed sensor ) to get speedometer information from. It uses the ABS system to measure wheel speed. And after approx 120 mph, it can not read the information any longer, and drops the speedo back to 0mph, if you watch as it goes back to zero, it seems to fight droping down, it will keep trying to go back up, but the exciter rings are just moving too fast for the wheel speed sensors to pick up the magnetic pulse that they need to read the speed. As far as the cutting out at 105, as this topic was started with, I have no idea's.

back on original topic, did you get a code for the IRMC or IMRC [can't remember which it is]. could your secondary's not be opening on demand?

All Gen 3 SHOs get their speed readings from the ABS computer.

I wonder if it might have something to do with the transmission? Back when I was experimenting with high speed runs I remember that if I left the shifter in D, the car would shift from 3rd to 4th at 105mph even at WOT.
If you turn O/D off, though, I believe the redline in 3rd gear is 135mph or so.
Didn't some 99s have an O/D lockout button and others didn't? If you have the O/D button, I would experiment with turning it on/off and trying again.

Up until halfway through the 99 model year, the SHO did have an O/D lockout button. After that, the button got removed, but O/D can still be locked out by dropping the shifter into D.

Start simple,

1. Fuel pressure
2. Plugs (Not so simple)
3. IRMC not openning.........
4. TPS

Always look for a simple solutions.... the odds of there being an code stored are slim.... unless you SES light has come on.

Help me out here Paul.... nice car kinda reminds me of mine...... :D

Mine still reads fine at least up to 135 so i dont think it is the 99's with this problem.

I thankyou all for help that you provided, and the weirdest thing happend the other day. For some reason I felt like testing it again just because, so I did and I got well over that 105mph speed so maybe it was my car just having a brief malfunction but whatever it was it seems to have fixed itself. I love it when those things happen :)

In reply to the speedometer not showing past a certain speed. In my 99 I can see my speed at 135mph no problem, havn't really gone past that but I know its good up until that

the speedometer cut out is exclusive to the 98s, ain't we lucky. from what I've read and heard the point of quit varies from 110 to 120 dependent on the car itself. mine quits at 115 but tach keeps going to better than 4750rpm [top gear] there are many different theories to what causes this but I think only Ford knows for sure [fixed for the 99s]

Sean, when you originally experience the problem (when you went to pass the slower car) what speed did you start accellerating from? An interesting quirk that I experienced with my former '96 was that it was very difficult to accellerate from a high cruising speed. IIRC, the mark was around 75-80 mph...

Example, if you were driving at 80 mph and punched it, the car would hit a wall at about the speed you mentioned of 105 and would not go any faster. But if you were driving 65 and kicked it, it would accellerate right up until the dark side.
