Can you be more specific on what you mean by the canister purge filter? I can picture the (charcoal) canister, but not the filter..

...and I can't see it causing driveability problems, no. Unless you're referring to something else.

Ahhh.

That's not a filter.

What that is is the canister purge valve, which opens up and lets the motor suck the gasoline stored in the charcoal canister into the motor to be burned.

Worst case, the valve will stick closed and you'll start smelling gas from the saturated charcoal canister. It won't cause driveability issues, so you can move on to the next thing

Wish I would have read this before I posted my own question. So, does anybody have a part number for the valve?

You can get one at Autozone

, its like $24 there and if you tell them what it is and for what model they will give you the right one. At least they did for me. You may want to do the canister too if the smell continues, because it can be saturated.

What? you mean you told them the car you have and they actually gave you the correct part? I went to autozone and tried to buy a front motor mount for my car, they kept trying to sell me the mount for an ATX. I even had them check the 89 SHO model and it came up as the same ATX mount. What a pain!!

The tubes near that canister valve have a small connector in them that appears to have no purpose. There is a very small hole that connector. It is a restrictor that keeps too much engine vacuum from collapsing your gas tank. DO not enlarge that hole!!!! Also, if that small hole gets plugged up, the engine vacuum will not be able to suck any fumes from the tank. The result is lots of gas fumes from the gas cap in warm weather, and a lot of pressure in the tank...very bad. That canister purge valve is a common part, it is found on all Tarurs's/Sables
