caps need to stay with the heads they came from...the specific journal, actually.

Yes, You will get more punch from the MTX cams,

PLEASE take LOTS of pictures and post up a detailed write-up of your swap. I'm hoping to do one this summer and I can use all the info I can get.

I never thought it was worth the extra time and energy, it does make more power across the powerband but still. My 3.2 swap still has 3.2L cams and it hauls:rofl:

Same here. More HP from the 3.0 cams yes, but more torque from the 3.2. I think the best combo is 3.2 intake and 3.0 exhaust? Or is it the other way around?

They say the 3.0 has a meaner intake and the exhaust cams are the same.

Dont confuse the caps with lash shims. Caps are machined while on the head and need to go back were they came from. Shims are changed around to adjust for valve clearance.

You can rent the tools and shims for a couple sources to save you money.

Yes, they are the same. The only differences between the 3.0 and 3.2 as far as timing goes are the timing belt tensioner and the timing belt (and I think the marking is really the only difference).

The cam gears, chains, chain tensioners and sprockets are all interchangeable between the 3.0 and 3.2 setup.

The only thing goffy about the swap is the marking on the cams to align them with the chain drive sprockets between the intake and exhaust cam, the 3.0 cams have dots that line up but the 3.2 cams are marked "funny" and dont line up with the dots on the sprockets. When you get to it I have pics.

so is it just easier to swap the sprockets? i would imagine that they bolt on the same way

The caps are "married" to the head they came from, because the cam bores were machined with the caps in place. If you move a set of cam caps to a different head than the one they were machined on, you will have slight differences in the machining that will be bad for the life of the cams and the caps and the cam races in the head. The same applies for switching the caps around to a different location on the same head, or putting a cap on backwards; this is why they're numbered and marked with arrows.

Then how would aftermarket caps be use if they were not married to head?

No clue. I've never heard of aftermarket cam caps before. Am I missing something?

Edit: Are you talking about lash caps? That's a totally different thing from the cam bearing caps...

Camshaft bearing caps are the pieces that hold the cam down in the head, and compose half of the cam "bearing" surface (obviously there are no "bearings", but they "bear" the cam).

Lash caps are the small inverted hardened-metal cup between the valve shims and the top of the valve stem.

As far as I know, lash caps are interchangeable between any V6 SHO heads, but cam bearing caps must stay with the head, position, journal, and orientation for which they were machined.

Well sure, it might be possible, depending on the machining and part-fit tolerances, but it's definitely not a good idea if you don't have to.
