I have three V8 SHOs which do not have the cams welded. Wondering if there is any markings on the camshaft and on the gears to line them up incase the the gears have started to move.

It will be painfully evident if they move.

The sprockets have approximately 30 spline that hold them to the cam tube. If the gear begins to move it will broach the splines that hold it there. Once it gets past the first splined position, it won't stop until bad things happen.

Gettem' welded.

How close are you to Atlanta?

Performance Plus in Madison is only 4 hours away from Rochester. I went there last year they did a pretty good job.

Not to say you don't have any welding skills, but many of the people who thought they could handle it themselves either don't own V8 SHO's anymore, or know firsthand what's involved with a V8 replacement.

I'd make the trip to Performance Plus or NESHO if it were me.

Wait... Rochester, NY or Rochester, MN? If it's NY, make the trip to NESHO. If it's MN, then make the trip to Performance Plus.

Someone else's spun cam that was posted on the forum a while ago... there is not supposed to be metal shavings running around the tube.

...and a close up of a bad one I bought from Ray. Note how the gear can slide all the way down the tube until it hits a lobe. And again, metal shavings = bad

I had mine done this past weekend, two of them had slide a bit. nice piece of mind once its done.

you could just pull all the cams out and bring them to be welded. if you dont mind all the motor work then shipping them out to someone for welding probably wouldnt be a big deal. thats what I would do if I lived in a remote area away from anyone that can do the job.

All the work of dropping the motor out the bottom of the car...

I didnt say it was easy motor work, but its allot cheaper to remove the engines and take out the cams to have them welded rather than paying around a grand per car to have them welded right under the hood.

I did my own welding. I have welded in the past at my old job but it was not that hard.

I practiced on a couple of old parts I had laying around before I dropped the hood to weld my cams.

I found that the material the cams and gears are made of welded very well.

These pictures were taken during my welding..

Not to mention, he's got a sweet sofa.

I think I know of this "that guy" of which you speak. Is this the same guy that has a damn perdy RM, and really knows his stuff?
