Cam Seals

Just attempted my 1st one and got it changed (the easiest one--front)...but here's the thing--apparently I cracked/split the plastic ring that goes around the outer part of the cam/cam seal itself. (I think it's part of the rear timing cover). I just put some ultra black RTV on the crack. I also greased the outer edge of the gasket with the stuff. Will the seal leak b/c of that or is it just "added protection"?

Thank you, sir! Guess that means it's "somewhat" pointless and as long as the seal is seated well, it's good. I RTV'd over the crack just in case.

Actually, I think it's a "curious finger/hair saver".

No need to fix the crack. That shield is removed on a number of sho's.
