I wouldn't bother pinning them if they have been welded decently, nor messed with putting JB weld on them.

Hey everyone.. sorry for the delay and no pics on this post... I was washing the bolts in a bucket and my phone fell in the bucket where my tappets we're lol.. then it sat there in water stuff for like 30 minutes and it doesn't work anymore.....


Anyhow... I have the heads on but need to be torqued down. I have some pics on my wife's but haven't got around to uploading them.

I need a tensioned guide thing from the junk yard because when I pulled my old head I busted the plastic clip off.

I will post a better update tomorrow lol

Hi Dean,

Did he weld each side of the octogonal part of the front cam ? Not sure when seeing your photo. This part can move with the sprocket if not welded to the cam. Seems solid for other places which welding he used ?

I am so glad tou mentioned this!! Becuase no the nut by the sprocket is not pinned or welded..... He used nickel rod and then put some kind of oil resistant stuff on the cam journals opposite from where the bearings bolt the cam down to the head.

This bolt nut thing that moves.... Well the rear cam has one right smack in the middle of the cam... Is this one prone to failure too??

Its auch a trip that the block and heads have so much potential but we get cams that wouldnt pull a YuGo Without spinning.

At least there are people like us who love this car so darn much to where we fix the issues we recieved..

Well, not sure I will do all you made to maintain the car with a problem like yours but I do my best.

According on V8SHO site from I rode a big part of the reported cam failures (near 2000), any of the 4 cams can spin off but rear seems more popular. Probably because heat changes are more importants. The octogonal part on the front cam is held in place the same manner as others part on cam (pressed in place).

Reply : "Well the rear cam has one right smack in the middle of the cam... Is this one prone to failure too??"

No, it's not usefull to weld there because no force is applied there. But on the front one, we weld the sprocket on it and then the mouvement/force is transmit to that part which can take loose like others small sprockets on the cams.

Hey guys and girls. Im back. And i just got off work with some great news.
I went ahead and drilled the nut behind the sprocket and pinned it too. This should be sifficent, correct? The size of pins i have decided to use was 7/32 and i used a titanium bit at 13/64 to drill with.

Also i will be timing and trying to get it all put tigether tomorrow. Hopefully even driving my baby too.

Tomorrow morning i am going back to the pull yard to get another timing chain guide. The one i pulled today was pretty shot...

The sho i took it off suffered a front intake cam failure by spining the sprocket in front of the nut i just pinned. It was sad to spin that sprocet with my hands... Kind of gut wrenching because i know how bad i felt when i discoved my cam failure.

We are timed!!!! Now that was a process.. I literally spent 6 hours 42 mins on this. The hard part was jumping one tooth at a time. To align the cam sprockets and oil pump. The easy part was putting my tone ring back on lol.

I have the timing cover back on as well as the power steering bracket too.

Im so anxious everone. I really want to get my alternator bracket on too. Mabey even my lower intake manifold.

Well i didnt have much spare time today as i worked a double.. So on my lunch break i installed my alternator and my serprntine belt tensioner. I also have my lower intake manifold on, and my front valve cover. My fuel rail is on too and so is my p.s. pump. Oh ya i have one idler pulley on too. Alao i ran some tape and protectant on tje rear harness.


Tomorrow....... I need to drill a bolt down by the water pump. As i put the wrong bolt in and it decided to snap off. So im going to drill it and tap it too.

If all goes well.... Ill be driving my car to work tomorrow at 3 if not... Then ill have a few lunch breaks to finiah it up. Either way it will be very very soon.

Hey everyone. I know that i have two posts open, but the other one is solved. Well so is this one as i drove Brittany to work tonight

Yes i named my car

The only issues i have left to fix are as follow.

1 Bolt on crank position sensor

2 Caps on exaust manifold where egr was

3 oil change in 487 miles

4 my tps wiring

5 fix knock sensors



I just wanted to thank everyone that has helped me along this pain staking ordeal. As i could have never done it without you all, and my gratitude goes out to you all.

If anyone experiences this... Dont give up as it is possible.. Yes it is a major p.i.t.a. and at times i myself was so frustrated i banged the cam bolts on my overflow tank.


Yes it is possible to do this with the motor in the bay.

Yes you can remove all 3 idler pulles and install them.

Abd yes you can remove the heads and timing chain cover with it in the bay.


Just ask questions. Do research. And most importantly..... Dont give up.
