Hi there. I searched the forum and can't find this issue mentioned.
I was having problems with a loud grinding noise from the front of my 2011 SHO. I could feel something binding up inside and at very low speeds the car would just stop from a mechanical fault.
Turns out the transfer case needs to be replaced at only 106,000km? My extended warranty is only putting a used one in.

My question: I installed the 18'. Police rims for winter with 235/60/18 tires all around. Would the smaller rims (stock is 20') cause premature failure in the T case? I can't see how it would fail so soon when I don't drive the car very hard.
Thanks for any help

As long as all 4 wheels/tires are the same size, it shouldn't make a difference. What was the condition of the fluid in the transfer case? Do you know if it's ever been changed?

no, the smaller wheels were not part of your issue.

we are seeing more broken PTU that I think we should, and there seems to be no particular reason. my suspicion is that some of the die-castings were not filled properly or were injected at not quite the right temperature so that flow lines exist in the castings, but that is just my educated guess, not based on any real data.

This is becoming an all to common sight with these cars. Best of luck on a speedy, and proper fix.

There have been numerous changes to the PTU (think part #'s vary by the letter at the end) it seems, or just relabeling. I've "heard" most recently, 7. So I'd point this out to them and suggest you'll be back soon for another if they go with a used older version.

Hopefully someone with better experience in these part #'s will chime in, as I'm just relaying what I've read.

We see quite a few failures on the Edge line per member reports. Speculation is underfill from factory, spec too low, evaporation of fluid over time, what have you. The result is a recommended 30K service interval on these PTUs (at least a check at that point). Don't forget to check RDU fluid as well while the car's on the lift. RDUs are more reliable, but do occasionally go south. Don't believe the "lifetime" sales pitch. What the mfr means by "lifetime" and what it means to YOU are rarely in sync.

I bought extended warranty from the used car dealer, so they are replacing it but they're putting a used T case in.
They said if I want a new one, I have to pay the difference of $700 can. Which I don't have. Hopefully this doesn't happen again and I'll keep an eye on the T Case and fluid

Lifetime means the duration of the warranty. I would think if they are failing at such a high rate there would be a bulletin or recall on them. I did notice you have a 2011 have they improved on the later model years?
