what part of the axel shaft breaks first? cv joints or the shafts themselfs. it's not a common thing, i know. i am curious if it's more of a matienence thing rather than a power issue.

thanks,
Corey

When I busted mine it was the druver side right behind where the teeth like things start, it not a common thing, and I am sure it is MUCH more of a maintnence issue for the joints.

It shouldn't be common for a street driven SHO. Both should last forever (if the CV boots are kept up).

I've broken the shaft and the joint. The cage busted on the joints. The shafts will tend to splinter at the splined ends after lots of hard drag strip passes. I haul spare axles to the track these days, no fun getting stranded (or to have your night end early!)

thanks for the replies. i hate hearing things like that, but i did ask.

on another note, i use that green CV grease supplied with the NAPA boots when i do repack jobs on my own and other cars. i think that sythetic CV grease might be a welcome change for me. has anyone tried it?

I have had my '89 for 2 years now and have managed to put about 30k on her in that time. I have broke 2 halfshafts (both at the joint on the driver's side). I have been to the track a couple of times and some street racing, but never abused the car. Both times there was no warning (the infamous clicking) or anything, just pop. This last one I installed I used the Redline line CV-22 I think its called. I have had no problems yet and I am coming up on the annual anniversary of the last breakage. Obviously this will not make the joint stronger, but I was hoping to cut down on heat friction, etc. There is a question I pose though. Can weak mounts (f. &r. motor, tranny) cause more stress on the halfshaft causing premature breakage? Let me know all of your thoughts on it.

I'm interested in stress related breakage also. I had a bad control arm on the right side, had it fixed, and now 2 weeks later the CV joint froze and I needed a new axel shaft assy. Is there any relation to these two problems and if any what else should i worry about breaking next?

Was I wrong for replacing my axels because the boots were torn and when I cut the wheels(steering) it made that clicking sound. And my car wouldn't exactly turn on a dime either. I had both axels replaced for $200. Or should I have repacked them.

No, you were not wrong for having your axles replaced. The clicking sound you heard is a good indication that your cv joints are about to go. The length of time it takes for that to happen is up to many factors. Since your boots were torn all of your axle grease was lost due to the axles turning and throwing it off the joint. The clicking sound is the metal to metal contact due to no grease. Better to change the axle and be safe than just to put new boots.

A bad strut or control arm (or any of the associated bushings) will but undue stress on the half-shafts. Bad motor mounts will too, but not bad subframe bushings. Good luck!
