there's a blue wire with a stripe that has its own plug on the back of the head unit (radio/tape section) it's in the bottom corner underneath where the cd player and power? plug into the head unit. what is it? could it be the redundant radio controls, and therefore by hooking up to system remote out of my aftermarkey HU i could use those buttons?

I believe it is the redundant controls, and unless you buy the unit that allows those buttons to still work (forget the name, but its aftermarket), they are useless after you get a head unit.

could i attach then to the system remote line on my HU? i don't have a system remote, or a system for that matter other than stock? just wondering if this could work, then the system remote would be the redundant controls? maybe?

The system remote is for an amp, and only sends a signal to the amp to turn on when the deck turns on. Would not work for redundant radio controls.
