I have been on the audi forums a LOT the last couple years and something I have been coming across is block cracking issues. One recent thread got me a little worried on my SHO powered camaro build. It is a completely different engine design but I though oh wow if it can happen on that thing I wonder if it could be a issue on my camaro once I really start to crank on that massive turbo.

this is a audi 2.7L V6 that suffered breakage due to massive power 700+whp

then searched around to see if the area under (or above) the mains on my 3.2 SHO engine has a weak spot like on the audi.

nope there is a massive amount of steel there. It has got to be close to a inch thick all the way to the cylinder bores. Hopefully that means I am good.

yeah, the SHO block is pretty stout - that is why it weighs to darn much...

I want to see that 700 hp dyno though....

I don't know if I am ambitious enough to go for 700whp but I really think I will have my never ending project car running this year.

Other parts of the SHO engine will become weaknesses long before you will damage that block. One will be rod bearings; our are too small for large amounts of torque.

It's pretty easy to see why that block failed. When you figure it out, you will realize that the SHO motor does not have that terrible design.

Wow. I can't believe those 2.7s have mains like that. That window is ridiculous. That's one of the reasons the later second gen Trans Ams with the Olds 403s were considered such turds.

it happens north of 700awhp and the easy (not cheap) fix is to use a RS4 block instead of a s4 block. From what I read a crank griddle goes a long way too... imagine that. oh wait the SHO engine already has that too. Too bad ford didn't improve this engine for the 96+ SHO and continue its life. Everything about the V8 SHO bothers me other than the stellar exhaust note.
