Awhile back I had some brake problems, the brake lines were corroded and I ended up having to splice in new sections. At the same time that this happened something happened to the speedometer and football. Not that I really cared at that time, it was cold weather anyway and usually I just flow with the traffic when I drive that car. I don't drive it very often anyway.

I have no speedometer and no radio/CD. I can't turn the fan off or on or adjust the speed of the fan. I do have rear defrost. I've swapped the football out with another known working unit with no change. I've checked all the fuses both under the hood and in the cabin, all are good. Battery is fully charged and the terminals are clean and making good contact.

I've read that the neutral safety switch can have some effects on the radio but I had replaced mine and I don't have any problems with starting the car so I don't think that this is the problem.

Anybody have any suggestions on what to check next? We're heading into the thaw now so having the heat on full blast will not be an option here before long.

Much appreciated!

It's the fuse.

Well after re-reading your post, I guess it's not. I would still try replacing the 5 amp fuse for the radio just in case. I blew mine and it took out the speedometer, exactly like what you have had happen.

There are three connectors on the left hand side of the fuse box. Try reseating these. Also the three on the bottom as they go to the GEM module. The RCC module is also in the works and is located under/behind the glove box.

Is this a '96?

Yep, this the 96 that hates me. :)

I'll poke around more on Tuesday, tomorrow's out because of work unfortunately.

Neutral saftey... did you have no PW when this happened.. How about radio power but no sound? Seen quite a few of these.. The first one took me forever to diagnose.

PW = Power windows? If so, I had no problems with the windows. The radio had zero power, zero sound. The fan controls are non-existant and the fan is on high all the time. The rear defroster does work.

Try whacking the top of the dashboard in various places. Hard.

 Dude, if I start whacking this car it'll be with a sledge hammer. Besides, we already determined that the "Fonzi slap" doesn't work with this car, remember? :p

Dudette!

Do you have the tools to remove the football? If so, try disconnecting it completely and see if the speedo comes back.

Which relay is this? In looking at my manual it lists fuses for the ignition but no ignition relays. I'm assuming that it's in the power distribution box, yes?

97 G3 Show - 125K - intermit problem same - some times the radio locks up and will not respond - the defrost comes on hot full with no control - speedo acted up once - I had a gut it may be the NSS as one morning I started the car and everything was fine then shifted into reverse and instant heat rush from the defrost. SHO2 - what is ing B? Bizzy, did you replace the NSS and did it fix the problem. Thanks ps - I ripped off the center console cover and beat the *hit out of the radio and dash - didn't work.

Um why don't you just try to find another football from a 96-97 and see if that fixes your problem. If it doesn't you can just re sell it on eBay. Full Hi Heat defrost can ruin your day while driving.

Check the fuse too.

High Heat Defrost on HI speed IN FLORIDA - is unbearable and increases the chance of speeding tickets (due to ventilating) exponentially. :)
