My 1990 SHO has a problem with overcharging the battery(boils it). It has worn out the one in the car so far and we picked up a new one today. We also removed the alternator and had it tested by a good electronics guy and he said the voltage regulator was fine. The battery idiot light also stays on. Has anyone veer had this problem and found a solution? The electronics guy said there may be a bad connection or a broken wire or something like that. Anybody have any ideas to throw around? Thanks in advance

with the car running put volt meter on the battery terminals and give us the voltage. actually check voltage before you start and after it is running.

the connections to the alternator are clean and tight. I put dielectric grease on them. All the connectors appear to be in good condition.

Have the alternator checked again. If everything is connected properly then the only thing that can cause the excess charge is the regulator or a component in the alternator.

we heard that the alternator may be getting a false reading that the battery is dead so it keeps pumping juice into it. Maybe a bad ground or broken wire? I thought that since the old battery was totally gone the alternator kept trying to pump it full of juice even thought it wouldnt hold a charge.

OK, so check all the positive and negative wires in the charging system, and the battery cables. Remove the light bulb from the under hood light and close all of the doors, glove box, etc. Put a volt meter on the battery and do a power draw test. Is something drawing power from the battery when everything is off? Is there a relay stuck somewhere, or a light switch that has stuck in the on position?

The battery cables are totally crapped out. They need to be replaced badly. We are taking it to a mechanic and have them see if they can find out whats making it overcharge, and have them inspect it. Thanks for the help.
