Which wire is the thinnest starter wire that is mounted on its own screw on the solenoid? is it the ground? I think mine is shorting out now and then.

I believe it's the ignition signal to the solenoid control side.

Pull the solenoid off of the side of the firewall. If there is ANY corrosion on the solenoid, it must be replaced or cleaned. I thought my original solenoid was bad, so I replaced it (ended up being another issue). I bought a $4.99 Autozone one and it rusted so badly in 6 months that it was no longer making proper contact.

I put my original Motorcraft solenoid back on. Works really well.

I did have to repair the wire from the clutch interface switch to the solenoid control (the wire you're referring to). It was corroded and causing excess resistance.

that wire broke on my ATX and it caused all kinds of headaches. The starter was in good working order, but wouldn't turn over, and then the straw that broke the camel's back was when the car went wonky shifting...doing 50+ MPH and it would slam into 1st gear...

I ended up running a new wire from the fuse panel to the starter...

Cool, Thanks. Hey teg, are you saying that having that wire broken made your trans act up? If so, how did it cause that?

A wire band-aid bypassing the harness is fine. If you're really careful when starting your car, the clutch interface switch can be bypassed or jumped, allowing the car to be wired up for a remote start.

Test the resistance throught the solenoid before chasing the ground. The wiring diagram I used was off of AutoZone's online repair guides. I can't remember where it grounds to.

If there is power from the ignition, through the clutch switch (when engaged), to the solenoid control during START, test to see if the SAME power is making it through the solenoid.

If so, your control side is ok. Next, check to see is the solenoid is activating. Hook a voltmeter inline with the power side of the solenoid that runs between the starter and the solenoid. IF you see battery voltage, when the ignition is held in START, you solenoid is ok. If you do not see battery voltage and you've already confirmed the control circuit is ok, you have just condemned the solenoid as the offending part.
