Bad daytime running light module

I've had this problem before, but I dont know if it has always been to this extent. My car is a US car, so it should not have the DRL module installed. The second owner apparently being an electrical geek [installed the gauges, fishtanks, possibly the previous alarm, but yet he didn't use any wire loom] I'm guessing he installed the DRL module because he thought it was cool.

Sometimes when I turn off my car, the brights will turn on. This is the only time I will ever see the high beam indicator on the dash light up. This had always been pretty random in the past, but latley its been happening every time. If I catch it, its not a big deal and I just turn my headlights on and off, and it turns off. However, it has run down my battery. So today, it happened a couple of times, no big deal. Well I pulled up to a building with lots of glass on the front of it, and I noticed my lights were turning on and off. I'm guessing it was doing it the whole time I was driving there. I noticed it doing this also once in the past week.

So, my question is, if my car isn't supposed to have the DRL module, I should just be able to unplug it, correct? I've read before that you need some kind of resistor to bypass it, but I guess I dont understand why I would need to do this, if it wasn't factory installed in the first place. Also, on the location of the DRL module. I know its on the drivers side of the car by the charcoal can. Is this outside the engine bay, under the bumper cover? or actually in the engine bay? :doh:

The DRL module is right beside the outer air box in the drivers side fender, you will need to remove the inner fender. Its quite easy to spot you will notice the thing with the cooling fins. I have removed mine but I got a jumper from a US car. I think if you just unplug it you will loose your high beam indicator and flash to pass. You can pull the "high beam" fuse and it will **** the DRL but you also loose the flash to pass feature but the indicator will continue to work. I would suggest trying to find a jumper plug to replace that crappy piece of British electronics.

I realize this is and old post, but am experiencing the same problem and have a solution for anyone else who might have this problem, and is unable to obtain a jumper.

First, Unplug & Discard DRL

with the DRL module unplugged, the high beam indicator and the parking brake warning lamps will not work. To fix this, install a jumper as suggested above.

-OR-

You can jumper these wires together by chopping the connector off and connecting the following wires:

Parking Brake Warning Lamp
Light Blue wire w/ black tracer
+
Purple wire w/ white tracer

High Beam Indicator
Light Green wire w/ black tracer
+
Gray wire w/ white tracer


To connect the wires together, it is recommended you solder them and insulate them with heat shrink tubing and/or electrical tape.

With the connector chopped off, and the above 4 wires connected together there will be three wires left over.

The purple w/ orange tracer wire is a fused 5amp power wire, it becomes powered when the key is in the start or run position. If your not going to use it, slap some heat shrink over it and seal it.. Otherwise this wire could be used for a relay should you decide to install some extra electronic accessories ;)

The Dark blue w/ orange tracer wire is a constant HOT wire on a 20amp fuse that powers the headlights. It would be best to not add anything to this circuit, cap it off with some heat shrink.

The white wire w/ orange tracer is the low beam input for the DRL module.. its connected to the low beam power wire on the headlights. It would be best to not add anything to this circuit, cap it off with some heat shrink.
