I have been trying to track down this leak. It started out of the blue and after the engine warms up, I can see/smell it burning up on the exhaust. I replaced the 5/8 hose off the heater core as that was leaking, but after I went to top off the coolant (engine running, but still cold), I saw a puddle dripping down from the back of the engine. What could possibly be leaking? I doubt it is a freeze plug, as the coolant drips onto the exhaust and everything up by my master cylinder is wet. I am at a loss here.

Your heater core has 4 portions of rubber hose. Two hoses connect the heater core itself to the metal lines, and two additional hoses connect the metal lines (one to the engine block, and one to the thermostat housing).

You can have a leak from any of those 4 hoses, or the metal lines themselves if they are rusted out.

If your master cylinder is wet with coolant, it should be pretty easy to figure out what is leaking. Did you investigate to see if you can tell where the coolant is coming from, or just see it dripping below the car?

Top the coolant off, start the car and get in there with a flash light. If you can see that the master cylinder is getting wet then its a pretty good leak/spray. Should be easy to see if you look close enough.

You have the 4 sections of rubber hose on the 2 heater core hoses and there are 3 separate 5/16s hoses under the throttle body/intake.

I've tried to pinpoint the leak, but have been unsuccessful. I see the other heater hose off the core, but it doesn't even drip. What else could be back there that holds coolant?

If you don't want to buy one go rent a pressure tester from autozone. It attaches to the radiator.

Two people have already answered your question in regards to what is back there.

We can't fix it for you. You need to get dirty and look a little harder, or take it to a shop and have them screw it up.

Maybe you could put some detailed pics up, so we could see the condition of the general area, among other things?

Finally had some time to really look at it. You guys are right, those were the lines leaking. Also searched and found the correct fix. Going to be purchasing the step down hose to replace the crimped portion of that line. I also found a pretty steady drip of oil coming from my valve cover so I will get that done today also. Thank you for your help,

Mike
