Bad Alternator, no warning light?

Replacing the alternator on my '89 SHO. I didn't know it failed until the car wouldn't start. Isn't there supposed to be a warning light on the dash if the alternator stops charging? The check engine light didn't light either.

On all mine the warning light never came on until the battery had died from the alternator being shot.

I plugged it into the cigarette lighter when I was driving with a bad alternator and the red warning light on this gizmo was on.

unfortunately, often the alternator light will not illuminate until the battery is very low. my typical experience has been that by the time the alt light comes on, the car will not start the next time I try it - not much notice...
