If you're concerned about an ATX just because it might be a little slower, then don't even bother getting a SHO, because you'll be disappointed when you can't even pull away from a new Toyota Camry.

I sell Toyota's and you're right, an SHO won't shake a new V6 Camry. I wasted a GTi while driving one over a weekend!!

The SHO is not a street bruiser. For me, driving the SHO is about driving a truly special car. It rides great, handles great, and sounds fantastic under WOT.

I've had both and I prefer the MTX. The ATX is a nice cruiser car to ride around in, or it's good if you drive in alot of traffic. It's not quite as much fun to drive as the MTX. I wouldn't be opposed to owning another ATX--but only if I had another MTX SHO. I wouldn't give up the MTX for the ATX.

Also the killer is that damn tranny in the ATX. $2200 rebuild from AAMCO will really **** you off. Then you know it's only a matter of time before it goes again.

I've said it over and over again but the most pleasant SHO experience is the one where you work on it on YOUR time and terms and not the car's. It's no fun to try to go to work or school and have the car break, but it is fun to have a car you drive once a week for 20 min. or so to get your "fix" and only put 2k a year on it. Cars don't break as much like that. :) My car still runs/drives fine with its issues after over a year and a half owning it.....b/c I hardly drive it.

well, Im MTX all the way...

but there is a group by in progress for the wavetrack ATX, so I think that was some inaccurate info.

True but there are only 7 ATX guys in the group buy. There were quite a few ATX sold so there are quite a lot of guys out there. Thus going back to the lack of mods.

Matt, you've had like 10 clutches, which at ~300/piece is 3000 dollars. I spent 3200 on my trans, and I'm going on 30k with it, and I've changed the fluid once. The original went 174k. Build it right, once, and it'll do all you need to do.

Oh, who has the fasted on record 1/4 mile SHO? A boosted ATX, with less power than most boosted MTXs. Heck, he didn't even break an axle while doing it.

Thank you.

Nice exaggeration to make a point. I have no where near 10 clutches. Yes I have had a few clutches which 1 was due to learning clutches, another one because the clutch was never right from the start etc... My latest clutch has lasted quite a while. So generally MTX do quite fine with clutches.

When a clutch goes you can do it yourself and have it last quite a while.

If you want to make generalizations we can start to talk about how ATX's eat plug wires on a regular basis, but I wont because I know its an abnormality.

If you want to talk about obsolete parts we can talk about the ATX timing tensioner, which you need to run your car. Without it you have no motor, no 3.2 etc... So the ATX is not immune from obsolete parts. Luckily we are looking to rebuild them.

Yes the fastest recorded SHO is an ATX. How many other fast ATX versus MTX? Not many but quite a few fast MTX. Your right he didn't break an axle it was the transmission. (I believe or it didn’t last long)

My point is making the MTX out to be the worst ever when the ATX is no better. Both have their good and bad points. Which you seem to want to exaggerate on the bad.

I'm basically saying is that you can buy new parts for an auto, while you cannot for the manual. Sure you can get a differential, but it's needed do to the weak stock one. But like I said, build it right the first time, and you'll be ok.

Both of you have great points.

In the end it's up to YOU to decide.

I had an ATX for 4 years, loved it. went through 2 transmissions (original, and out of a parts car) and the final one lasted 3 of those 4 years before I sold it. I had a MTX 2years before, and Have another MTX now. I cannot say for sure which I prefer, but I like having 5 gears instead of 4.

Having known owners of both- the ATX transmission on the SHO I would not own personally. I chose MTX because I wanted to stay away from that. That being said, choose what you want. If you want the car because it's a great car and you don't care about the Auto/MTX choice then go for the car. But again, don't go for it just because it's convenient- get something that you can't NOT buy.

I am saying you can't get a critical part for the ATX Motor (3.2). So neither one is better in the area of obsolete parts.

Had an ATX, loved it.. add an LPM, and a Y-pipe, and they are not that slow.
Even killed a S-2000 with it!!
Now I have a MTX, still working out the bugs after engine/clutch/wiring harness replacement..
Something to be said for being able to push start it.. LOL :salute:

I was wrong in my mileage, I'm going on 40k with the rebuild. It shifts just as hard as it did when I drove it from the shop.

As far as s/c or turbos, the transmission has nothing to do with it. It's what the person who owns the car wants to do. I will say though, I'm the odd ATX owner. ATX owners as a whole **** their own aftermarket.

I grew up with MTXes, so this is always my 1st choice when buying a car (and one of the main reasons I got my '91). I don't baby the car, yet it doesn't clutches alive, I get around 120-130K out of them. The tranny is solid, albeit mine is a bit notchy. As far as color goes, driving a black in- and outside car in the AZ heat borders on suicide - but I find the color combo appealing in a less hot climate.
