I put in a low mileage (rebuilt with~10k miles) ATX 2 months or so ago and noticed the shifting was not what it should be. Its a 94 obviously with the better ECU. This didn't bother me too much since it had been down the last few weeks for other maintainance issues, however now that I am driving it on a regular basis it sucks:
Tranny shifts into the next gear at about 3K rpms-no higher.
Tranny does not downshift except when braking or coasting. This really POed me tonite when I was slowing down for a red light and then it went green and the tranny had only downshifted into 2nd and did not downshift to 1st or upshift until 3K with WOT.
I do not like troubleshooting automatic transmissions, thats why I got out of that business 3 years ago. No codes thrown...I love 111.

the VSS will cause stuborn shifting, but if its not throwing a code? just before my VSS was replaced, the car was shifting when it wanted to. with the pedal to the floor it would shift at about 4000, and it would downshift while slowing down (downshift hard)...

similar to what I am experiencing just no codes. When the tranny was shot it spit out a 2 and 3rd gear problem, thats it.

You have classic VSS symptoms. I just ran in to this on a customers SHO. It was shifting at 3k no matter what. It will shift very agressive too. No codes. Replaced the VSS and on his way he went.

The only other thing that would/could give you that type of symptom is a TPS. But my money is on the VSS.

Well since the timing chain tensioner has started knocking today I will pull the intake off and replace that. Hopefully that allows alittle more room to access the VSS. It definitly downshifts agressive back into first. Thanks guys :thumb:

you can drop your y-pipe and get to your Vss from under the car by wrapping your hand up the back of the tranny. if you have really small hands you might be able to get to it without removing the y-pipe, you only have to replace the black sensor on the top/side of the housing. i believe it only has one C clip holding it in but that sombitch will fly if your not carefull :)

sounds exactly like what my car was doing when my VSS went out.

I had the exact same problem after I replaced my tranny. Check the VSS connector near the oil pressure sender. Sometimes people forget to reconnect them when replacing a tranny. Don't ask me how I know.

my mechanic told me that he pulled the cover(?)that the VSS is on, and that made it a lil easier...check into that...and possibly replace you O2's while your down there!

Not to bring up a dead thread or anything, but did changing the VSS solve the problem?

I'm having similar issues that ohfosho had.

Yes, my low mileage tranny had a bad VSS. Once I replaced it, it was a night and day difference.
