ATX problems

after driving for a while on a warm day 90's the TCC seems to stay locked when shifting and even downshifting until it cools off a bit. i just got the cooling system working good so no problems there, only wondering about the valve at the bottom of the radiator. will it cause it to do this? how do i bypass the valve?

i took the valve out all together and the lines going to it and also bypassed the radiator. i just started at the two lines going in and out of the tranny, ran a 18k finned hayden cooler mounted in front of the condensor. i dont think its adequate enough so im going to put another stack plate cooler in also since i yanked the original upon finding it was curbed too many times and beat to death by previou owner. there is mixed feelings on some of this but the stacked plate cooler is supposedly better than fins. that would help to cool it off a bit. if you havent searched this yet, do so, there is gobs of information about this topic.

I also failed to mention that the power steering shuts off. is this a sort of over heat protect mode?

It could be sensor related, it always has been with mine anyways.. although if so you would have a stored code. Shift problems always manifested themselves more often as the weather got warmer. The VSS is located right above the cats and all that heat keeps eating mine up, Ive replaced 2 in 30,000 miles. Unfortunately many trans problems manifest themselves when heated though.

This is definetly the speed sensor. The VAPS (variable assist Power Steering) is also run off of the speed sensor and will switch to it's firmest setting once the signal is lost. To verify this is the problem, next time you come across these symptoms try using your cruise control. If it is inoperative your VSS needs to be replaced.

I never lost any cruise control functions either time when my VSS sensor went bad, I dont know if that is a MTX only thing. The symptoms that identified my VSS were bizarre shift points when heated especially going up or down hill, (it felt like it couldnt find the correct gear for the speed and would "search" for it) and a stored code indicating the VSS
