ATX Problems

Hello,

I think my tranny is going on my 94 atx. The car has 137K, and don't know when or if any tranny service has been done on it. It's banging into gear and when I slow down it bangs out of gear. Also when I shut off my OD, the tranny wouldn't shift into 3rd gear. What I would like to know, could this be a VSS problem? And..what is a VSS? Or is it just time to rebuild the tranny?

P.S. the tranny fluid smells burnt...

More info... When I floor the car from a stand still, it shifts into all gears no problem!! No banging or other sounds, at about 70 or so it shifts into 4th and the power just dies!!! Also, will not downshift once in OD.
