Bench tests are not accurate tests

Passing on one is no guarantee, but a failed bench test will tell you something right away. I always bench test new alts. before I leave the store. At least I'll save time by not installing one that failed the bench first. Learned that trick when I was on replacement alt. #3 in the same day.

Did you replace the fusable links that attach to the + side post of the under-hood fusebox? If I am not mistaken, one of them is for + alt output, one is for the alternator's + voltage metering input. I know if they are burnt / kind of burnt, the alternator provide a weak charge to the system.

Where is the fusible link you are talking about, is it the one that runs to the fuse box under the hood? I think there is 2 fusible links for the alt. but I'm not sure where they are.

I had something break loose in one I bought from Advance Auto. They insisted on testing it and it locked up their tester.

I never said to pass on the bench test. I was just saying just because it passes a bench test, don't assume it's fine until you load test it on the vehicle first. That's all.

Yup. I just wanted to stress that -it's not great and reliable for units that pass- but can still be useful.
