Crap, I just got back my SHO a week or two ago, looks pretty nice but my ATX just blew. It was working fine, then the tranny kicked down into second, wouldn't shift out. When I started to stop at stop lights it would try to kick into 3rd then back to 2nd and it was jumping into all of the gears. I get home, I check all the fluids, everything full. I wake up the next day with a huge puddle underneath my car, luckily it was in the street. I check my tranny fliud, BONE DRY, I am going to jack it up and put some more tranny fluid in and see were it leaks out. Hopefully I just blew a hose off or something cause I am Broke. headbang

All that gear jumping sounds like a bad VSS, but can be anything in a SHO. frown

Sorry to hear about that :( , I am babyin my ATX till I can get it replaced at the end of summer. How many miles do you have on your SHO, and what year is it? Sorry to be gloomy but your most likely lookin at a rebuild, or replacement.

I figured that I'm gonna need a rebuild but I was going to figure a few things out first, like where it is leaking from putting it on jacks and crap. I am wondering if a gen 3 tranny will bolt up to mine or if I need to modify it or something because they are better trannys than the 93's. My 93 has like 129500 miles on it and never had a rebuild so it is due for a new one anyways. I am also wondering if the gen 3 wont bolt up if the 94/95 non sho had a tranny as strong as the shos of those years cause I heard they are stronger and shift alot better.

Thanks for all your input,
Jason

You can't bolt up a 3rd gen tranny onto your engine. The 93 trannys are the weakest, but the 94-95 are a bit stronger. You would be better off tryin to put one of those in. They are identical except for the internals that are stronger than what is in the 93s. Their is a 95 rebuilt with low miles on ebay right now, might wanna take a look.

Ehh for $1300, I would part my sho out and buy a gen 1 and put some money into that instead. Thanks for your help. Also about the gen 3 trannys I have seen some people that say they have that tranny, how'd they do that? Does the non-SHO 94/95 tranny have the same internals as the 95 SHO tranny? I could prolly find a 94/95 aerostar, taurus, or a sable at the junkyards around here.

Thanks,
Jason

Sounds like you might've blew the pump seal. Here's what you should check. 1. Fluid Pan Gasket (I doubt you blew one of these) 2. Speedometer gear sensor. Doubtful again. 3. Tranny fluid pump seal in the bellhousing. Very common when a load is put on the tranny that it can't stand, especially with an old seal. 4. Seals where the halfshafts go into the tranny. Your "skipping gears" problem might be caused by a dry torque converter, or lack of tranny fluid to give the clutch packs their "friction ability" Before spending money on a new or rebuilt tranny, pull the old one out, and check that seal for the pump. If I'm wrong, I'll eat my words. If the fluid is brown or dark black, I'd consider a rebuild. Good luck man...

When I don't have the car started when checking the tranny fluid, it's red. I wish my tranny didn't go out cause I just threw $1400 into fixing body damage from a wreck.

Thanks,
Jason

You could be super crazy like me and attempt to an ATX to MTX conversion. A perview of me while the work is in progress: rant lol My ATX is at the end of its ropes too and I am looking for a doner car now. Or you could be normal and fix it or get a different car. Just something else to think about since you put all that money into the body.

Jaxon, my advice after you get this all straightened out is hopefully you get a 94-95 tranny to put in there, but to help extend the already short life-span of the SHO ATX is invest in a Ted B. LPM for the car as well as a 94-95's D4U1 computer. Trust me I've experienced the horrid ATX problems in the past with my 95 ATX that I used to own, and if I had it all to do over again, I would've had that LPM a long time ago. SOme people think the LPM is just for the thrill of quick shifts but in actuality helps pro-long the crappy ATX by getting rid of those slushy shifts that can wear components over time. I know how you feel. I was without my ATX a few times due to tranny issues and it just plain sux. Good luck.

Hmm, I read somewhere that the aerostar/sable/taurus all had the same automatic tranny as in the SHO. Is the place I saw this wrong? Are you sure it's not just the MTX that is SHO specific?

Uh - Aerostar is a rear drive vehicle. The SLO and SHO Trannies are very similar - but the SHO Tranny has stronger internals IIRC. I know the pan on the ATX has SHO stamped into it.

Well I guess if I can't find a cheap tranny for my car I'm parting it out and buying something other than a sho cause I can't afford a SHO if I just part mine out. Just put $1400 into the car to fix it from a wreck and now my tranny blew up.

The SHO ATXs and MTXs are similar to other models but are reinforced internally to handle the SHO. They may look the same on the outside but are different.

Does anyone know what part that is? It is leaking alot out, and it might be the problem.

Probably the forward input seal on the tranny itself, possibly the torque converter seal.

It looks like the leak is evident at the junction of the transmission and the engine.
