under hard acceleration, the shift from 1st to 2nd can take several seconds. The car stops accelerating during the shift and seems to take a little tto long to finally grab 2nd gear. Can you think of some reasons this might be happening?

Let me guess, you have close to 100k,right?It sounds like most other ATX`s,it`s time for a full rebuild.

138,000 miles so I am sure something big is needed...but what do you think is the problem? Plates sliding, teeth ground down, etc...I just want to be ready when the transmission guy gets his hands on it.

Also, should I be getting some kind of rebuild kit?

Sounds like classic time for a rebuild. Have them add a trans-go kit while they are in there.. it will be the best $75 you ever spent!!! Good luck!!

About how much would a full rebuild and the Trans-Go kit cost with labor and everything??? (I'm just preparing for the inevitable)

Hmmmm, makes me wonder if/when my tranny is going to ever need a rebuild (95 with 64K).

Yours does this all the time under hard acceleration? Mine only does it every once in awhile (ie 3-6 months). I can tell when it is about to do it as the tach goes past its normal rpm before shift (I get a good 1-2 shift right at 6K when I floor it, so if it goes above that, I can usually tell if it is going to do the hesitation thing, so I let off the gas). I would say I drive my SHO harder than my Crown Vic as since it is much faster and more fun to drive, and it still only does it once in a great while. Im going to do a Redline flush and fill and replace the filter and gasket. See if that keeps the life in it long over 100K. When was the last time you had your fluid changed? Reason I ask, if the tranny is due to be replaced (with a Jasper or a FPS tranny), you will be out 2-2.5K, I would suggest doing the fluid and grannying it for a bit to see just how much longer it would last.

Just a thought

Definitely, I am taking care of the tranny as much as possible. It's rare anymore that I accelerate too quickly and I flush the fluid. In fact, it looked quite clean at the last oil change...

For $2-2.5 thousand I can buy another SHO in better condition and with fewer miles...
