Ive been reading alot of comments lately about the atx trannys. Since this is my first sho, Ive been trying to get to know as much as I can. Is it just the 93's that are bad, or is it all second generation atxs?

Sadly yes, they are all crappy. I am experiencing some fun with mine right now. Hopefully yours will last you a while though!

The very nature of any automatic transmission is that it will need to be rebuilt/replaced.

Instead of having an external clutch (like a stick), they are all internal and every single shift they are gradually wearing out.

Sooner or later they wear out all the way and need replacement.

Combine that with the fact that people generally neglect servicing their auto tranny and drive the crap out of their car, some don't last too long.

It isn't that the SHO ATX's are weak, it is just the nature of Auto tranny's in general.

I got 143k out of my original ATX, and 75k out of my rebuild (crappy rebuild), and am running a FoMoCo remanned one right now.

but the fact is the 93 is considerably weaker than the 94-95.

if you get over 100k out of a 93 you are doing very well indeed.

on the 94-95, over 150k should not be uncommon, unless it is significantly beat on.

I have a 94 ATX with 183,000 miles on it. Original tranny. The previous owner towed with it too. When I got it, it shifted fine. All I did when I got it home was drop the pan and flushed out all the fluid and filled with Mobile 1 ATF. There was hardly anything on that magnet. If you just take care of them they tend to last. I am not easy on my shos either. Knowing my luck it will probably fail tomorrow......

i cant agree with that its not that the clutch packs wear out from shifting on the atxs
its been found the problem with the SHO atx is that it cant flow enough fluid and it gets hot which is related to not flowing enough.
the atx is a bad design and wasent built for the high reving SHO engine. they will claim it was a beefed up version of the normal tauri trans but it should have just been redesigned from the ground up.
**** in normal tauri they dont last for a damn.

you have to run them without O/D on unless your on the highway or they will shift themselves ********.

a well designed auto will last a long time considering the clutch packs are of a wet design they really dont wear unlike a manual car which dry friction burns off more material.

my cherokee right now has 220k on the oringional transmission and shift perfect everytime thats counting abuse of towing from previous owners as well as some from me and also i replaced my tq converter seal with a cheapy and now its leaking again so i got tired of checking it now i just run it till it slips then i know its 2 quarts low..
really most other autos would be dead doing what i do to it but the autos in jeeps are of a different world. they last forever and can take a lot of abuse as well as running hot out of the box.

you are really lucky w/ your Cherokee if you have 220k on the original trans. the Jeep trans are pieces of crap way worse than the 90s Ford transmissions and almost always need rebuilt by 100k or sooner.

Lol @ Sean. "New" I knew someone with a ATX who had to rebuild his tranny three times before he finally gave up on the car. When I got a SHO I refused to get a ATX because of the reputation.

That being said I have also heard that if you get the tranny rebuilt right they're ok-- but again there's that whole bit where you have to get it rebuilt because the original is fail.

I get my information from actual Jeep owners - we take them in on trade every day and virtually every one with over 100k has had the trans rebuilt.

I went to the trans shop and said "I want every upgrade available." He did it, and it still shifts like it did on day 1.
