Anyone with high mileage 2010-2011 SHO? How's reliability?

Hey everyone, a hopeful soon-to-be SHO owner here. I actually currently own a 2010 Taurus SEL, and it's been such an awesome car. A total tank, with no reliability issues at all. But when I close my eyes at night I dream of being behind the wheel of one of those sweet sweet Ecoboosts. I really would like to get a 2013 or newer, but I detest car payments, so if I did switch to a SHO it would probably be something with a similar year and mileage as my SEL. Now I know that with a high-performance car there's bound to be a visit here and there to the shop that I might not have to make with my SEL, and I'm alright with that, as long as the repairs are minor. But I've heard horror stories about the early 2009 and early 2010 models of the SHO, and don't want to make a purchase that I will soon regret. So I turn to you guys. Anyone have a 2010-2012 model SHO with higher miles on it (say above 60,000)? How has reliability been? I'd also really be interested to know if anyone has 100k+ miles and what issues they've had, if any. Thanks in advance, everyone!

I'm rapidly approaching 133K miles in my 2011, so far no issues. Livernois tuned for the last 20K plus miles, but I don't beat on it every single time I drive it. I'm even surprised at how long the tires are lasting. I've felt like they were close to needing replaced for the last five months and now I think I can stretch them another 6K easily. Got 30K on them so far. The only thing I can complain about on mine is there is a slight noise from driver side window, almost like it's open a tiny bit when it is closed.

I would say overall my reliability has been great. I'm only at 71k miles but it's been "mostly" issue free. The only real issue I've had was the rear turbo was leaking a little bit of oil (not enough to leave anything under its parking spot, I could only smell burnt oil sometimes at stop lights). Since I'm OCD about any issues I had it replaced. But really that's the only issue I've had and I consider the turbo a fluke that I probably could have driven with for several more years if I wanted.

Got my car 1 year old with 28k on the odo, now have ~42k. Only have had two issues with my car.

It wouldn't start, had it flat bedded to the dealer and they said I needed some electronic thing that controlled the fuel pump. I purchased Ford's extended warranty so I only paid $100 for the job (towing was free).

Then I recently had a vibration when braking at higher speeds, dealer told me I needed new rear rotors and pads. He said the front rotors should be machined, but they haven't had a lot of luck with that and they also suggested a brake flush. Service guy was not pushy, just offered me options.

I wanted everything like new so I got the whole thing done for $765, braking is ultra smooth now. Glad I did it.

You've heard horror stories about the 2009 SHOs? Pray tell.
What I mean are the 2010 model year SHOs that were manufactured in 2009. Lots of issues with things like oil supply and return lines for the turbos going bad and leaking, causing the turbos to fail, but the info might not be entirely true.

My family's 2005 Expedition had that same issue with the fuel pump computer. And I've heard that one of the biggest issues that the 2010 to 2012 SHOs had were brakes that were too small, a problem that was remedied with the 2013 and newer models. But it looks like you've got a 2014, so it's interesting that you had vibrations like that. I have something similar in my Taurus (not bad, but noticeable) and got the rotors machined, but it didn't do much.

Thanks everyone for the replies, this is helpful!

My car was purchased used as an executive rental, so I don't know how the car had been driven. Yeah, it cost me some cash, but to have the brakes replaced all the way around made me feel like I had a fresh start with the car's braking system.

Also, purchasing a former executive rental pretty much guaranteed I was not getting a modded car (I purchased a Ford extended Warranty and did not want a car that is/was tuned).

Good luck in your search for a vehicle, keep us posted!

I have currently on my 2014 SHO with PP miles wise 154800. This is my third SHO I use for work car and drive every day for that. Have only had minor issues with each of them reaching 200k miles before getting another one.
Only one of my 2011 had turbo go bad but it was expected as it had around 170k at that time. Other than that normal wear and tear items with sunroof issues that were also minor items.
Knock on wood never had motor or trans issues ever on any of them nor had any electronic issues either.

I would not keep buying them each year if I had issues I can tell you that. My other work car I cad last year was also a Explorer Sport with the same drivetrain and that thing actually went 235k before I donated it to kids with cancer foundation and I know they still use it as well everyday still.

IMO, something worth noting is how the vehicle was used to get that mileage. Driving 75k miles/year I would guess you're driving a lot of highway miles where the car is turned on and run for longer periods of time. It's not like a car that has a ton of startup cycles and driven harder in stop and go traffic. While 150k miles is still 150k miles, highway miles are going to be a lot easier on everything than stop/go traffic and engine startup.

I agree 100% with you on this statement and thoughts. It also has a lot to do with how you maintain any car IMO. I am a fanatic about my cars work or pleasure and it shows even with a ton of miles on them. Sad part is they hold no real value with the miles on them like this. That is also why I opt to donate them most of the times vs trying to sell them or give them to a dealer on the next car I buy.
Now that we have been talking about it I thinks its about time for me to visit the Ford dealer and see what I can get for another one to replace my current SHO lol.

So I know this thread is old but what about SHOs with 200k+ miles on it? It seems like it has been taken care of. Should I stay away from 2010-2012?

Thx

Just like everything else, it depends on the price. Personally I would rather save several thousand dollars on initial purchase price and get a higher mileage car because if the miles are ridiculously high for the model year, it's a good indication it spent a lot of time on the highway.

I would not spend more than 3 or 4K on any SHO that was over 200K miles.

The other factor is how much money do you have in the bank? Are you able to afford 10K for a new motor if it comes to that, can you afford 2K-2500 for a water pump or timing chain? Is 2K in the budget in case the turbos fail?

If buying one of these cars puts you anywhere near the edge of your financial means, and you have to have the car last thru the end of your payments without one of the above things happening, I wouldn't recommend buying one.

I absolutely love mine, it's the first car in my life that I've kept more than a year and a half. Plenty of power, lots of fancy options, gets decent mileage on long trips, huge trunk space. My next car will also most likely be another SHO, but you have to be able to absorb the worst case scenario or it's not a great idea to buy one.

Honestly, if you can afford the 2013 SHO. Buy it. Benefits 1) It looks like a 2018 SHO 2) Larger rotors and pads 3) PTU cooling jacket and drain plug in PP models. 4) Most of the bugs were worked out by 2013. 5) They depreciate like crazy so a high mileage 2013 should be very inexpensive. That's my .02.

86k on mine and tuned for the last 36k or so. No issues and running like a champ.

Edit: Just realized this was a bump to an old thread. As far as 200k+, ignore me. lol

125k on a 2011 here. Completely stock. Romp on it now and then, but lots of highway time as well as airport parking lot time.

PTU went out at 70k (1k after I got it... thank goodness for extended warranty). Rear shade broke at 71k. (again, warranty, phew - that was nearly as much as the PTU!) Pads and rotors were replaced at 69k by dealer, and I just replaced front pads and rotors at 120k. Tires at that time, too (were new at 69k, so lasted about 50k - not bad!). Starter replaced last week, was starting to drag. Battery replaced two years ago. Replaced the little EGR thingy that sits between the intake runners last winter - about $50 for part.

It's starting to need more stuff done to it, but it's 5 payments away from being mine, so I'll deal with it until it blows a turbo. Will likely keep it after that anyway - this car is awesome. I thought the Lincoln Mark VIII LSC I had was my favorite... it's my second favorite now, this SHO is loads of fun.

I've had my 2010 for 6 years now. I've had to replace both turbo's around 80k miles. But honestly, I'm not all that upset! I've got fresh turbo's and that means I won't have to worry about them now that I'll be installing a tune over the weekend. Another reason I'm not upset, it's the only significant repair bill I have had in 6 years. I'm almost at 90k now.

80K is about when they need to be replaced on the 2.0EB in the Edge as well. LOL.

81k on the body, chassis, and drivetrain.

Everything else, literally, has been upgraded replaced, or modified in some fashion on my 2010 Non-PP.

I have about 20k on the LMS long block conversion race motor. 15k or so on suspension. 15k or so on the ATP turbos. 10k on Wilwood big brake upgrade. 5k on the massive audio build. Those are the biggies.

But suffice to say, I plan on keeping my SHO long term. So I don't mind investing in her.

She's a blast to drive. Whether on the street, at the drag strip, or the autocross/road course events.

Always ALWAYS turns heads, causes double and triple takes, illicits lots of questions, compliments, and positive feedback from nearly everyone that sees it.

Fun is an understatement for this platform.

Purchased my 2012 SHO with 59K miles and now have around 80K. As soon as I bought it I replaced the spark plugs, changed all of the fluids, and replaced the rotors and brakes, along with some other bolt ons and a 93 octane tune. Did it need all of that? Probably not, but I don't know how the previous owner maintained it so I wanted a clean start. It did, however, need rotors as it would almost bounce the car when I braked.

To this day, I have 2 complaints. I think the brakes/rotors are undersized for my car (non PP). She stops if I need to brake hard but it's got a little moan to it. Daily driving, non hard braking is the luxury experience you'd expect.

My true complaint is the Sync 1 stereo. If it weren't so expensive to replace, it'd be in the trash. I've updated the software to the latest version but I still consistently have BT syncing issues. It will connect to my phone 100% of the time and allow me to play music or make calls, but about 25% of the time there's no audio at all. The only way to fix it is to reboot the stereo.

Other than that I'm pretty happy with this car. I drive a combo of city/highway, probably 60% city. She's fast and hasn't given me any mechanical issues at all. No leaks, no strange sounds, no smells, everything works.
