Anyone know anyone in south-eastern Michigan that can install my stage 2 cams (along with the polished valve covers) for me for a reasonable price.

That would be SWEET! Is it a big deal or not if I get the shims. The guy said I wouldn't use all of them but I wouldn't know which ones to use so I would need the variety. Hopefully they will be here soon.

The guy who is gonna send the shims said that I need to find out which size shims I need first then he will send them. So maybe next weekend we could just find out which ones I need and then when I get the shims we could do it another day. Would there be any problems when putting these in?

Is the guy's name Tom? If so, don't count on having the shims by next weekend. :D If they don't show up you can always get the 29mm shims from here. wink

Also, Macomb Power Sports on Gratiot also carries a large selection of Yamaha & Kawasaki shims. There's another Kawasaki dealer in Macomb Twp. that has a kazillion of them.

Edit: A question and a word of advice. Did you get lash caps? If so, make sure that the shims you use are not the way thin ones. You run the risk of the cam lobe ejecting it out of the bucket.

It was SHOmurph I beleive. I bought the cams from Craig Smith and he had SHOmurph take them out of his motor and sent them. The shims I guess broke or something so he had to get new ones to send and he just PM'ed me and said to find out which ones I need so he can just send those ones.

Ok, that's good news, but keep in mind that every head is different. You can take the cams off a car and reinstall them on the same head and sometimes the measurements for the shims can be different. In other words, while the shims he's going to send you may have worked for when they were in his car, the chances that you'll obtain the same measurements when they are installed on your car are not very high. Does that make any sense? If not shoot me a PM and I'll try to explain it a little better.

I'm not saying that you can't get the cams to work, because you can, but just be prepared with additional shims in the event that his don't fit correctly.

Bizzy is absolutely right.

I have the shims that came out of the other motor but if I sent them to him and they didn't work then he would be upset. Every shim that came out of that motor might not work.

I told Tyler to let me know which ones he needs and I'll send what would work. I might not even have all the sizes he needs. I had to get shims for two different people/collections to get all the gappings right.

Do you think I could be able to get the cams in in a day?
Installed? Sure.

I was able to swap my cams (stock for stock... long story) in under 2 hours.

However, as people have already told you, having the proper shims ready to go is damn near impossible, if not completely impossible. You will not know what shims you need until you remove the old cams and install the new ones.

Well Bizzy said there was a yamaha dealership that had shims so maybe if I do the cams we can just run to the store and buy the ones we need.

You're on the right track! thumb Macomb Powersports carries them as does the Kawasaki dealer up in Macomb Twp. They are a perfect replacement, just make sure they are the 29mm shims.

Pretty much what you'll need to do is get the cams and have a selection of shims available. No worries if they don't fit, hang onto them for later use as it's always a good idea to have extras. Once you get some shims, you can install the cams and try each shim to find out what size it should be. If you find that it's too tight, or too loose then you'll have a better idea of what shim you'll need for each lobe. Then you can go and buy the shims that will work.

As I said in my PM, each and every head is the same in regards to functionality, but each and every head is also unique due to casting differences, wear, etc. just like a human body or a snowflake.

You CAN do this so don't get discouraged. You'll love the change it makes in your car. thumb We're always here to answer your questions and lend a hand when you need it. wink

Not being a regular Forum visitor, I just picked up this thread. Since these posts are over a couple of weeks old, I'm guessing that you may already have the cams installed.

What concerned me was the thought of Stage 2 cams going into an ATX SHO. Unless you go to a much looser torque converter and/or the 3.99 chain/gearset, either the Stage 1 or 2 cams will produce a serious lack of low & midrange torque, which is especially critical for an ATX. If you are running the Silver State or Maxton, it's no big deal. If you want to beat Hyundais off a stoplight....you might have trouble.

If the cams are installed, what do you think??
