16 sho. Purchased new in april. 6500 miles.

Driving home on turnpike last night and heard a pebble hit. Great. I see the small impact about 3" from driverside edge and about 12" up from hood. Smaller than a dime.

Go out this morning and have a 2 foot crack horizontally across the windshield stemming from it...

Seems like i had a very weak windshield. I mention this bc i found a 3" shallow scratch (that i buffed out) a few months back (different local). No idea how it got there. Carwash? No clue.

I guess im s.o.l. and will have to pay the replacement ($250 comprehensive deductible...)

Has anyone had any issues? Did i just have bad luck or have others found their windshields not being durable?

The turnpike is always under construction and i take pebbles once a month or so (it seems) but ive never broke a ws before...Thoughts?

Normal for the Taurus.... They are prone to windshield cracks... Just make sure you get it replaced with OEM glass... aftermarket glass is even worse..

What is the glass insurance policy like in your state, Hoots? Might be a good idea to get zero deductible insurance if there is a high chance of debris contact with the windshield. From some accounts, it is normal in NY and AZ to replace the windshield almost yearly!

Yikes. Guess ive just been lucky these past years with a 14mkz and 08 taurus.

My policy (erie) has free winshield repair(they wave the deductible)... but replacement isnt covered in any way.

Still waiting for ford to get me a price. What am i looking at in cost?. The glass placez are quoting $215- $250 but ill go oem since i read rain sensing and lane departure/collision warning can not work as good with an aftermarket...?

Thanks for the replies

you can usually get oem glass at the glass place, and they install windshields for a living, so I'd go that route.

Had one OEM and 4 random Chinese brands... Never had an issue with any of the sensors not working... Dealership usually just subs out that work anyway.. probably cheaper to go right to the shop..

Erie insurance hate them, Home owners sucked. refused to pay for broken picture window because i cleaned it up after a tree went through it , Tree still in yard , window replaced as did not want the rain to keep coming in. BTW am 1 mile from their corp headquarters, lol

So my online quotes were $250 but after speaking in person and needing the rain sensing, etc, im looking at $375 3rd party and $425 oem.

The guy told me that my insurance likely wont pay for the oem if i decide to turn it in... why would they?

At a $250 deductible i dont even want to deal with those aholes at erie over a hundred bucks. How annoying

Near philly pa btw.

Sounds about right... Don't think you are getting hosed... Just make sure the installer has a good reputation.

We were driving in my wife's 2012 and heard a loud crack, sounded like a pebble hit the windshield and I'm frantically looking all around but didn't see where it hit. When we stopped next I looked all over the windshield and didn't find a single mark anywhere. Kind of forgot about it until she goes out to get in the car about 3 weeks later and there's a huge crack coming up from the bottom of the windshield over on the passenger side. Apparently the pebble had hit right above the shroud in the portion of the windshield you really can't see from the inside and it slowly created that crack.

My wife handled getting the appointment setup for Safelite to come replace it in our driveway. I wish she would have let me handle it, but when he got there I asked the guy "is that OEM glass?" and he said that it wasn't but they could have put OEM glass in it if we told them to and it would be a bit more money. In total it cost about $350 out-of-pocket and with the non-OEM glass in it there's a massive distortion along the bottom edge of the glass. OEM would have been around $400-450ish so I'd say your quotes you've received are in line with what I found.

My 011 got the 3rd party and the 014 got the Carlite.
I really do not see any diff???
I will go out and look now that I have something to check.

I was told what happens is that the 3rd party companies make a mold of the the oem glass and then reproduce it. It's more of a quality control issues I believe... Say Carlite has a 1% defect ratio while the 3rd parties might have a 5% defect ratio.. chances are you will get a decent windshield either way...

Fwiw the glass guy told me his non oem is very high end and he is pretty sure they sell glass to ford when i asked if he had a preference.

He basically said if using insurance and they will pay for the oem why not? If out of pocket he said ge would save the $50.

I told the guy my commute and he was surprised this is my first one. Told me to plan for it every 1-2 years....

Awesome
