I'm planning on an extreme weight reduction and Gen1 basketweaves with drag radials for later this summer. Just curious what the basketweaves will look like on my Gen2. I figure going from 16" down to 15" will help my acceleration in the 1/4 mile. Is it possible to fit 14" wheels? Maybe go with smaller brakes from an ealier Taurus?
As for the weight reduction I want to gut the engine compartment, dash, interior, trunk and roof. My goal is 2600 lbs, I figure I'll need some lexan and fiberglass doors, fiberglass hood, no bumpers (all custom made by me). It's all ok since this will be a drag car anyway.
I would appreciate serious replies and no flaming, thanks.

Actually, the basketweaves weigh very close to the same as slicers. And assuming you are running similar diameter rubber on both, the slicers would be the better setup.

you can get a fiberglass or carbon fiber hood/trunk. lexan windows will be custom. I'd also make them stationary and gut the doors. And like you said pull out the bumpers.

I'd stick with the Slicers, or plain ol' steelies will probably be lighter. good luck on the reduction :thumb:

my 15" weeves and tire combo were HEAVY compared to my slicers. stick with the slicers, or some other lightweight wheel. I think it was Marcel who had photos of his SHO riding on weeves for the winter.

If I can find lightweight wheels for cheap that would be fine but I suppose my true intention is to reduce the overall tire diameter. I think it would help with straight-line acceleration which is more important to me. I'm going outside right now to see if I have room to fit 14" wheels. But where would I locate the appropriate 14" wheel?

yea, that's a good look right there, is that your car? Now if I could just find the right drag radial to put on there. I've read that the original tire size is 215/65-r15. What is the shortest tire that one can install on that rim? Where do I locate specs on the original size tire such as width and height?

It's a car that I bought for parts and I just recently removed the drive-train. Sorry can't help you with the tire sizes though.

What do you guys think if I install the 14" wheel/brake package from the standard Taurus sedan? I can then run 205/55/14 Nitto drag radials, or something similar. The tire diameter would go from stock 26.2 inches down to 22.9.
