Another fuel gauge question

I bought my SHO about a year and a half ago and the previous owner had the 155lph Walpro pump installed. From the service records, I saw that one of the tickets stated "Customer is aware of fuel gauge not working, Check for fuel leaks from previous installation". My gauge always stays full except when I shut her off for a few hours, then she reads around 3/4 of a tank. When you turn the car back on, it goes way past full and stays there. When I run out of gas I dont even get a fuel light. Im not sure if the previous owner installed the pump/sender correctly. My question is, Can you buy a fuel sender seperate? or do you have to buy the fuel pump/sender as a assembly? I tried to drop the tank but the bolts were excessivly tight. You can buy the sender separately, SPI makes it.

also check the plug on the sending unit,they go bad quite often on fords.
