Jack it up (with the vehicle off), get under the vehicle and run the linkage through the gears. If you can do this I would bet your problem is in the shifter box itself! Does the shifter seem loose?

I would say the problem is in the shifter linkage in the little black box on the underside. Most likely the weld that holds the cup to the shifter linkage has broken loose. I would take the shifter box off, inspect the internas and go from there.

If the weld is broken just take the linkage and cup assem to a good muffler shop and have them throw a weld on it. When your putting it back together make sure you pack the inside of the black box with heavy wheel bearing grease. This keeps any water from causing rust on the welds/other linkage pieces, seems to give a better feel to the shifter and stops the annoying squeaks from the shifter ball in the cup!
