Looking for ideas.....where has everyone who has aftermarket audio equipment mount thier amps? Currently i have mine just mounted to the box (makes for an easy steal). Is the back of the rear seat solid enought to mount an amp? Any feedback is greatly appreciated...

I cut a peice of 1/2 MDF. Of course I'm not trying to conseal my amps but while it took me several weeks to complete my project I had my stock amps mounted to the back side of the board. This concealed them completly. I'll try to send you some pics over the weekend.

When I pulled out the original amps that were in there, I just mounted them where they were. The metal is soft enough to drill through, so you can add more holes to it

I mounted my 3 amps to a piece of wood and then mounted the assembly behind the rear seat in the trunk. That was easy because I didn't have the orginal amp, keyless entry module or anything else mounted back there.

I still have my keyless entry box. As indicated above I cut a 1/2 piece of MDF, carpeted it and mounted my crossovers and amp to it. ALL wires come through holes that are concelead by the amp except for the crossover were only about 1" show's. I'll get pics hopefullyt this weekend.

OK here's the pic I promised. All the wiring and keyless entry box are mounted to the back side between the seat and board. This used a minimual amount of trunk space.

Can you mount amps upside down (i.e. on the trunk lid) my friend told me his sub amp burnt itself out that way because it couldn't cool itself upside down. That doesnt seem to make much sense to me. b.t.w. I've got a sony class-d 1000w amp in the trunk that's gotta be mounted. b.t.w. anyone got amp suggestions for powering 4 cabin speakers (somethin I can pick up used off ebay perhaps for not a ton of money).

yeah mounting the amps on the trunk lid is a bad idea, they like to be vertical. For interior amp go with a rockford fosgate 500x. You can't go cheap on a amp.

I've actually seen several custom systems with the amps mounted in the trunk lid. Keep in mind as I recall they all were cooled by internal fans. So if you don't have this as an option probably want to mount the amp vertical or flat on the lower surface so that the convective cooling can take place.

Here's how my amp is mounted:

jb12.jpg

Some thinner (3/8 or 1/2) MDF and carpet. The amp has internal fans, so the enclosure just has vents where the amp sucks in and blows out air. Never overheats, but then I'm only running it at 4 ohms right now; haven't tried 1 ohm yet, because my electrical system would probably crap out. Until I get a cap, I just have to settle for >300W.

jelloyacket, Ive got the same subwoofers as you... what type of enclosure do you have yours in. Mine are in a sealed box with seperate chambers for each sub. I dont like the way they sound. I have to turn the crossover to 50 hz because they are awful with the upper bass. Im wondering if I should try a ported box before getting rid of these sub.

Security is a must for me, so there is lots of welding etc behind the amps just for piece of mind.

You will never be able to keep someone from stealing it if they want it, promise. They will destroy your SHO in the process but they will get what they came for. The best antitheft device is your not running around showing/flaunting or bragging about your system.

Oh I know that i'm naive, it just like I said, it gives me piece of mind, same goes with a car no matter what you do someone will steal it if they want bad enough. Plus i'm not like the local punks that think there cool pumping there nasty ass sounding all bass stereo systems, then a few weeks later they are surprised its all gone lol. Plus I have had good luck with these Orions, I have had them for 4+yrs now, only time people see them is on SHOForum b/c even on my web page they are not shown. Even when I talk to people about my car that dont know me I tell them I just have a deck/EQ, and I always have a saved "no bass" setting(7 settings in all) on my EQ for when I have someone in my car I dont know or if i'm near my home.

slickn,
the subs are in sealed .8 cu. ft. 3/4" MDF boxes. The fronts are 3/4" Plexiglass. As far as sound, it's all right, but I've been having sealing problems on one of the boxes; once I get that fixed, I hope it will make it sound better. Also, with stock speakers getting full range from my head unit, I can't really distinguish what's sub and what's not in the upper bass / lower midrange. I do get some pretty bad resonance (like 12 dB or so) that I'm trying to tune out with my parametric EQ and some test tones; I'm wondering if some dynamat won't fix some of it.
