Ok so Yesterday I got my SHO back from the shop, and today it seems the alternator has gone to shit, the car will die about after 5 min with all everything on, and it when i try to fire it back up it has a dead battery. So the car has 313k on it. My question is how hard is it to change the alternator? I cant pay for it to go back into the shop.

If its a hard job I will just part the car out.

There should be a write up somewhere. Its been a awhile but when I had mine changed I'm pretty sure there was one. I wound up taking it to a shope since I didn't quite have the tools or the knowledge at the time to loosen the tensioner and such. The alternater itself is fairly easy to get to. I believe a shop charged me 100 bucks labor.

will an alternator from a 94 regular Taurus work? I would rather spend 40 at a junk yard rather than buy a new one,

Changing the alt out on this generation of SHO is very easy. There is a write up somewhere. In a pinch you can check the shotimes.comFAQ for an older write up. Not sure what is compatable but rebuilds and remans are a crapshoot so you may need to go through several to get a good one.

Ok iv found a write up but it appears my setup is totally different. It seems I have a bolt that is under an idle pulley. Is it ok to take off that pulley? Ill have pics of what I am talking about soon.

Ok sorry for the double post. Here is the bolt I'm talking about.

Here are the two bolts I think I have to remove

As you can see I would have to remove the idler pulley to get at that bolt. Am I going about this the right way? Can I just remove that bolt on the idler pulley and will it just come right off and go back on?

Thanks for the help I'm suck a noob when it comes to cars as you can see :nut:

First an alternator for a regular Taurus will not work I belive.

First you will need to relieve the tension on the pulley. By doing that it will get it out of the way so you can pull out the bolt.

I would go for a new or rebuilt alterantor that way you know it will last. The junkyard unit might only last a day, you dont know. We do have them: SHO Source

Cool. I have a brother across the river in Suffield, so I'm in the area every now and then.

Let us know if you have any more trouble. Good luck!

on that diagram in the thread you need to loosen number Chilton book siad it was a 14mm socket but it was really a 17 and you have to go clockwise to loosen the belt.
