Ok one morning my battery light came on and everything electronic was going haywire. And even after replacing the battery the light still comes on until the engine gets to high enough rpms then goes off and at low rpm everything goes nuts. So after ready some post. It seems as if it would be the Alternator. How hard is it to change the alternator? What tools do I need?

The battery light coming on means the alternator is going out (not putting out enough juice).

You will need some standard sockets and a little know how and you can do it yourself. Just remove the battery and the battery tray. Use a socket to pull up on the belt tensioner and remove the belt (good time to replace). Unclip/unbolt all the wires going in/out of the alternator. Unbolt the 3-4 bolts that hold the alternator in. And it should be ready to pull out. Reverse to install.

Having replaced 4 alternators in the last 6 months, this is my advice:

1. Go to autozone/pepboys and buy a torque wrench. This will be a serious help in gettting those 4 bolts off the alternator. $10-15.

2. Buy an unbreakable 11mn socket for the bolts. A lot of the sockets out there are crap and will break easily. $5.

3. There is an ATX alternator on ebay right now for $10, buy it. Don't bother with a $180 new one.

Also, you may run into trouble removing the battery tray. The bolts tend to strip easily so be careful. If that does happen, it is not essential to remove the tray, it just makes the job easier.

I would also check the front plug going into the alternator to make sure it is not rusted. If it is, this could be the cause of your alternator going bad and that will need to be replaced as well.

You never use a torque wrench to remove bolts..... A breaker bar on the other hand

It helps to remove the plastic plate on top of the rad, as well as to coolant bottle.

Check that the mounting bolts go into the threaded holes on the new alt. They, the threaded holes, might be filled with paint and need to be chased with a tap.

speaking of alternators, I am looking for one for my 94mtx... does anyone have one they are willing to part with? either used and in good condition or new, it doesn't matter PM me with any details

At least you guys don't have to remove a supercharger to get the alternator out But I'm okay with that problem.

That's FUNNY.

I am needing to replace the one on my 94 as well. I thought it would be harder then that. I can do that in about Two hours or so if that's all you have to do. I thought you'd have to remove more stuff then that.
