My alternator has developed a fairly disturbing 'chirp'. It sort of sounds like a bunch of crickets especially above 3k RPM. It still seems to be charging the car, but I assume this is a sign to have it replaced? How much time am I looking at before it dies?

yeah probably on is way out, they usually dont last longer than a week if making noise or acting up powerwise.

first check to make sure that there is nothing 'foriegn' near or in it, and that the belt is on right. also listen closely, tensioners make noises when going out too.

i'm prety sure it's not the belt slipping; it seems WAY too metallic for that, and it's just so consistent. Just to make sure, i took the belt off, and gave the pully a spin with my hand, and sure enough, it makes a little squeak at the same place in the rotation (albeit not nearly as loud). I guess that means i'm not making it on sunday
