OK, I have a problem, I hope someone can answer.....I got my car about a month or so ago, the airbag light flashes 10 times then stops, then flashes 10 times and so on.....the codes that I got from shotimes.com says "Diagnostic Monitor Internal Thermal Fuse-Open Due to Intermittent Short to Ground" ?????? What does it mean? What do I have to fix/replace? How do I then reset the light? Any help I get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think when it flashes 3-4 times it means low power. I had it do that when one of my battery cables was lose, its a long shot since yours flashes10 times but it might be worth a peek just for the heck of it.

When I 1st got my car from the dealer, that was the problem they were having. All I know is that something was grounding somewhere, and they ended up finding it in the door. Sorry it doesnt help too much, but it is what I know.

Mine started doing the same thing except it flashed 4-2-4-2 over and over. I'm not exactly rich so my fix consisted of electric tape over the back of the "Air Bag" light. Do you really NEED an airbag anyways? LOL!

OK you win, MrSho, That is the best reply yet, however, I already beat you to it, I have the official Motorcraft tape over the light already! I am curious on how to solve the problem, short of taking it to Ford. I guess that I will as a lest resort. But for now, the tape is working fine. Thanks Again.

MrSHO,

The 42 code is defined as, "42 Primary Crash Sensor #2 Feed/Return Circuit - Open." Your #2 sensor is either failed or the connector or wiring to it is damaged. I have a Gen I which only has one crash sensor, so I am not familiar with its location. Check a service manual or ask a Ford technician where it is.

Yeah well I did have the sensor replaced so I'm thinking it is probably the wiring, but at like $100/hour I just don't think it's worth it.

Airbag 10 flashes, Diagnostic Monitor Internal Thermal Fuse

I've read all the posts on airbag flashing lights and I have the dash appart and the airbag removed and the light still flashes 10 times. I believe the problem is the wire is shorting out somewhere or it is touching a ground. WaterRooster says he found the short in the door and i'm interested in which door do the airbag wires run through and if theres another place I could look for a short without tearing everything out. Checked all the fuses and everythings good. I would appreciate any help on this one.

Airbag 10 flashes, Diagnostic Monitor Internal Thermal Fuse

I found some help on this issue from another site and this is what a guy says, "9 times out of 10 (probably more), when you get the code for the internal fuse blown, it's just a puked module. (thermistor that blows is internal to them, so you have to replace it anyway).
I"ve replaced hundreds of them. Never, (yet), a return repair." Is there a way to test the module to see if it is the problem or do I just get a new one and cross my fingers?

Same thing happened to me on my '90. If the airbag control module senses a persistent short to ground in any of its sensor circuits, it blinks the appropriate warning. However, if the short is intermittent, the module will blow an internal fuse to disable the airbag system. That's what Code 10 means. This fuse is not serviceable; you have to replace the control module. It's a blue box just above the glove box. The moral is, if you get any other airbag warnings, fix them before the module checks out for good.

ever since i got my car the air bag light flashes 5 times..so ive determined that its either the sensor over the radiator (car is a 90 so i beleive its the only one)or its the clockspring in the column...so guys thats another thing to check too is the clockspring and i even think there is one for sale on e-bay for short money too

SHOSKI90,

First, do not do anything until you disable the airbag. The code 10 should only be addressed AFTER the diagnostics are done for a code 5.

Dissable the airbag:

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least 15 minutes for the back-up power supply to "bleed off".

2. After the recommended period disconnect the back-up power supply, which is located above the glove box under the dash. The power supply is a capacitor that will edischarge approximately 15 minutes after the battery is disconnected.

Now you can do some diagnostics and perform services to the airbag system.

Remove the airbag by removing the four nuts and washers securing the airbag to the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector. STAY OUT OF THE FRONT of the airbag. MAKE SURE YOU ARE GROUNDED AS STATIC ELECTRICITY CAN DISCHARGE THE AIRBAG. CARRY THE AIRBAG FACING UP AND AWAY FROM YOU, AND SET IT DOWN FACING UPWARD. KEEP OTHERS AWAY FROM IT, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN.

Attach a jumper wire to the airbag terminals on the clockspring.

Befor going through 6 pages of "five flashes" diagnostics, do you have a parts car or access to an extra airbag diagnostic monitor? If youo do try replacing the diagnostic monitor and see if the code 10 goes away and the airbag system returns to normal. If you do not I will post the diagnostic steps if you care to try fixing the problem. rangerj

airbag tests

OK ACE, and SHOSKI90, I'll post the tests for 5 flashes then for 10 flashes of the ABS light.

A couple of safety considerations need to be pointed out first.

KEEP ALL PARTS OF YOUR BODY OUT OF IN FRONT OF THE AIRBAG. CARRY IT FACING AWAY FROM YOU, AND FACING UPWARD. SET IT DOWN FACING UPWARD. MAKE SURE YOU GROUND OFF ANY STATIC ELECTRICITY (touch something metal that is grounded or zap the dog) BEFORE TOUCHING THE AIR BAG.

NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIRBAG.

The instructions "DISCONNECT" always refers to a connector. NEVER DETACH a component from the vehicle when instructed to "disconnect".
Reconnect means to connect the component you disconnected, for example a sensor.

REACTIVATE SYSTEM means connect everything, including the air bag, and lastly the battery. Check( VERIFY) the air bag lamp means put the key in the KOEO position and see if the lamp stays on for a few seconds (4 to 8 sec) and then goes out, or it flashes a code.

All resistance checks must be made with the negative lead of the ohmmeter at vehicl ground NOT BATTERY GROUND, unless specifically directed otherwise. Three places are recommended; the metal bracket of the starter relay, the ignition lock cylinder on the steering colmn, or a good ground wire from the wire harness under the instrument panel.

NONE of the components are servicable, but rather must be replaced.

The jumper wire that jumpers the clockspring/airbag terminals (on the 90) goes from the wire 614 Gray/orange to 615 Pink (the two outer ends). This jumper wire is necessary to test the system without the airbag in place. The jumper wire is part of the DEACTIVATION process.

Test # 1 With the ignition off "DEACTIVATE" the airbag system as discussed above.

With the jumper wire in place, reinstall the back-up power supply and connect the battery. Put the ignition switch in the run position (KOEO) and verify the AIRBAG light. does it flash 5 times?

YES? we go to the next test.

NO? Dissconnect the batery, the back-up power supply, and replace the airbag. Reconnect and reactivate the airbag system. Verify the airbag lamp. (KOEO) If the light flashes 10 times, REPLACE the Diagnostic Monitor.

AGAIN, ANYTIME YOU REPLACE ANY AIRBAG COMPONENT DEACTIVATE THE SYSTEM. DO NOT SKIP A STEP IN THE DEACTIVATION PROCESS.

step 2 DEACTIVATE the system
DISCONNECT ALL front (crash)sensors (left, right, center)
Verify the airbag lamp (KOEO)

5 flashes go to step 3

10 flashes go to step 4

Airbag lamp does not flash either 5 or 10. Replace Diagnostic Monitor.
Reconnect the system (sensors) and verify the airbag lamp (KOEO)
If the lamp works correctly reactivate the system.

test 3. Check resistance of front sensors
Check for intermittent shorts in circuits 617 and 619
perform all three of the following tests;
Attach an ohmmeter to ground and to the appropriate pin on each front sensor connector
right sensor circuit 617 pin #17 wire color PK/orange stripe (PK/O)
Left sensor circuit 621 pin # 19 PK/O
Center Sensor circuit 619 pin # 18 PK/White stripe

Resistance should be between 1000 and 1300 ohms for each sensor. If it is REPLACE the diagnostic monitor, reconnect (not reactivate-yet) the system and verify the airbag lamp. If OK, REACTIVATE the system. Remember to connect the battery LAST and make sure the back-up power has had time to drain or "bleed off" its "juice" befor installing the airbag.

If ohms are not as specified replace the faulty sensor, verify the airbag light. If the lamp still flashes code 10 install a new diagnostic monitor, reactivate the system, and verify the airbag lamp.

Test 4.
Disconnect the diagnostic monitor and perform the following three tests.
Attach an ohm meter to ground and to the appropriate pin on the diagnostic monitor wiring connector;
pin #17 circuit 617 wire PK/O (pink/orange tracer)
Pin # 18 circuit 619 wire PK/W (pink/white)
pin # 19 circuit 621 W/Y (white/yellow)

Is the resistance less than 1 ohm for any test?
YES - trace the circuit(s) to find contact to ground and service(repair)
reconnect system and verify the airbag lamp If lamp flashes fault code 10 - replace the diagnosyic monitor. Reactivate the system and verify the airbag lamp.

NO - Resistance is 1 ohm or greater - go to next test.

Test 5. Check circuit 615 (Gray/White) between monitor and driver air bag.
Remove jumper wire from the connector (from clockspring to the air bag) and leave open.
Fault code should change either code 4 or code 6
CODE 6 Go to next test (6)
CODE 4 Go to test 7.

TEST 6. Check Clockspring
Short to ground in circuit 615 GRAY/White between driver air bag and diagnostic monitor,
Disconnect clockspring connector to 14401 at base of the steering colmn,
Jumper wire connector circuits 614 (gray/orange) and 615 (gray/white),
Verify air bag lamp. Does lamp flash code 6?

YES Trace and service circuit 615 short to ground between clockspring and diagnostic monitor. If code 10 is present, or no short exists, REPLACE diagnostic monitor.

NO - Lamp goes out Replace clockspring. Reconnect system (not reactivate). If code 10 is present replace monitor and verify airbag lamp.

TEST 7. Short in circuit 614 (gray/orange) or 623 (Purple/white) Check circuit 614.
Disconnect rear safing sensor
With an ohm meter check circuit 614(GY/O) pin 11 and ground
Is resistance less than 1 ohm?

Yes - A short to ground exisists in circuit 614 (GY/O) between safing sensors, air bag, and pin 11 of the diagnostic monitor. Trace short to ground.
Repair as required. RECONNECT and REACTIVATE the system. VERIFY the lamp. IF no short is found, or code 10 is present, replace the diagnostic module.

NO. - go to test 8. (DEACTIVATE THE SYSTEM)

TEST 8 CHECK CIRCUIT 623 (P/W) pin 12

With an ohm meter check circuit 623 (P/W) pin 12 and ground
Is resistance less than 1 ohm?

YES - Trace short to ground in circuit 623 (P/W). Repair as required. Reconnect and reactivate the system. Verify lamp. If code 10 exists replace the diagnostic monitor.

NO - Go to test 9

TEST 9.CHECK REAR SAFING SENSOR
With an ohm meter check circuit 623 (P/W) in sensor connector and ground (with sensor attached to vehicle)
Is resistance less than 1 ohm?

Yes - Replace rear safing sensor. If code 10 exists replace diagnostic monitor, reconnect systems and reactivate. Verify air bag lamp.

NO. - Replace diagnostic monitor Reconnect and reactivate the system and verify air bag lamp.
END of TESTS for FIVE FLASHES.

NEXT TESTS FOR TEN FLASHES, but first I need a cold one. Molsons please!
I'll post the rest of the test later today. (Tomorrow for those of you on the West Coast) rangerj :corn:

Before I go on with the posting of the code 10 diagnostics is there an interest in my doing that? Is this information useful to anyone? If anyone needs this information I'll post it.
